GameStop Gaming Tablet Coming This Year

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 04:00 AM PDT

GameStop is considering either partnering with an OEM to build a tablet, or creating its own. According to Gamestop boss Tony Bartel, the association is still determining in between building the own line-up or regulating an existent pattern from an OEM, depending on the strength of the gaming knowledge as well as the coherence in regulating the Bluetooth-connected controller.

Last week, GameStop announced two acquisitions: Spawn Labs, a streaming technology company, and Impulse, a subsidiary of Stardock Systems and a leader in digital distribution (think alternative to Steam). If the retailer could leverage these technologies on an upcoming tablet, it would certainly have some potential. That being said, the tablet market is going to become quickly saturated with a variety of options, and many are going to get axed very quickly.

Novell first to enable development of .NET applications for Android using Microsoft Visual Studio and Novell is betting there's a market of .Net and C#-savvy developers who are interested in writing for non-Microsoft platforms.Mono is the first set of tools that lets devs write .NET and C# apps for Android phones and tablets……….

Novell announced the availability of Mono  for Android, the first solution for developing Microsoft  .NET applications for the Android platform using Microsoft Visual Studio. With the addition of Mono for Android to its existing Mono development tools, Novell is enabling Microsoft .NET and C# developers using Visual Studio and other environments to utilize a common code base to easily create applications for the industry’s most widely-used mobile devices, including Android-based smartphones and tablets, Apple iPad,Apple iPhone and Apple iPod Touch.According to statistics released by research firm Nielson, Android has a 29 percent consumer market share, making it the most popular smartphone platform. With Mono for Android, .NET developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) can utilize Visual Studio and their existing skills to build a vast array of Android-based applications and sell their products into this massive market.“Since the introduction of MonoTouch in 2009, developers have experienced how Mono streamlines mobile application development,” said Miguel de Icaza, Mono project founder and vice president of Developer Platforms at Novell. “As a result, many asked us to build a similar tool for Android. We developed Mono for Android to give both individual developers and businesses a way of sharing their code across multiple mobile platforms, increasing efficiency and reuse of their C# and .NET expertise across the board.”

Mono for Android consists of the core Mono runtime, bindings for native Android APIs, a Visual Studio 2010 plugin to develop Android applications, and a software development kit that contains all the tools needed to build, debug and deploy applications. Developers trained in Microsoft Visual Studio can stay within their preferred IDE, while using their existing skills and .NET code, libraries and tools, as well as C# programming knowledge to create mobile applications for Android-based devices. With the Visual Studio 2010 plugin, engineers can develop, debug and deploy their applications to an Android simulator, an Android device or the Android Application Store.Mono for Android complements MonoTouch, Novell‘s popular solution for developing applications for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Developers utilizing Mono for Android and MonoTouch can save time and money by sharing common code between iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android phones and tablets, as well as Windows Phone 7, Windows desktops and Windows Server. A Mono for Android add-in also allows MonoDevelop users to develop on OS X.

“As a mobile software developer and middleware vendor, Resco customers are enabled to use our products to develop MonoTouch, and now Mono for Android applications for Android and Apple devices,” said Michal Sartoris, senior developer at Resco. “With more than 3,000 customers, our business success depends on us delivering feature-rich, highly-quality applications to the market before our competitors. Novell is providing us with innovative, cross-platform development tools that enable us to reduce the cost and resources required to create mobile applications.”All editions of Mono for Android are available now through http://shop.novell.com. Mono for Android Enterprise Edition is available for US $999 per developer for a one-year subscription, which includes maintenance and updates. A five-developer Enterprise license supports five concurrent developers and is available for US $3,999 per year. Doom 2 On PocketBook 360

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 02:16 AM PDT

Doom 2 gets ported to PocketBook 360 Plus e-reader and that was recently done on the as yet unreleased PocketBook 360 Plus e-reader, in an effort to demonstrate its new Pearl E Ink display and Freescale processor……….

The developers over at PocketBook ported a version of the video game Doom 2 to run on an updated version of the PocketBook 360, called the PocketBook 360 Plus.Information about the PocketBook 360 Plus is scarce at this point, but the video below shows some of its potential. It is presumably equipped with an E Ink Pearl screen and a new Freescale processor to achieve frame rates for video games.E-readers have a few advantages by using an E-Ink display rather than an LCD solution. They use a lot less power, can be seen in most lighting conditions including direct sunlight, and present text on a screen that looks almost like paper therefore cutting down on eye fatigue. It's unfortunate then that they can't do color yet (or ta least not well enough for a company like Amazon to consider it for Kindle) and have very poor refresh rates. If those two issues were solved we could see a move to E-Ink for tablets like the iPad and Galaxy Tab happening.

E-Ink displays are clearly getting better in terms of their screen refresh rates at least. An employee at PocketBook has posted a video on YouTube demonstrating this fact by showing the PocketBook 360 Plus e-reader running id Software's Doom 2. That device uses a 5-inch E-Ink display, yet has a screen refresh good enough to show fluid movement around a Doom 2 level. It's by no means perfect, but is just about good enough to be playable. And while we definitely wouldn't state this is a gaming platform just yet, it does bode well for the future if E-Ink displays continue to improve. And even with this e-reader you could ship a number of less animation-dependant games that would work well. The video description states this is a PocketBook 360 Plus. The PocketBook website only lists a PocketBook 360 so this must be a new model yet to be announced. We suspect the specs will be pretty similar though, with the 360 sporting a 5-inchVizplex 200dpi E-Ink display with a resolution of 800 x 600. It has 64MB RAM, 512MB flash storage, and a 1000mAh battery which is sure to disappear quickly when playing the game due to the rate of refreshing.

This is similar to the video that Bookeen posted a couple months back where they managed to get video to play smoothly on a Pearl screen.Running shooter video games like Doom 2 on an E Ink ereader isn't something that is going to be practical, but it is good to see E Ink advancing in potential for future applications. Something like this could be applied to E Ink's new Triton color display technology with greater benefits down the road.

* Improved quality of video received from Skype on mobile devices
* Skype shows users' presence icons on collapsed contact profile cards
* Conversation topic editing button is now always available on the conversation header
* If a phone number is added to a profile after a failed call attempt, Skype starts a call automatically
* Automatically switch to SMS entry after user adds mobile phone number to profile after failing to send SMS due to lack of phone number

However, there are still a couple of problems that remain in Skype 5.3. The integration of Facebook with the app means that Skype makes use of the Internet Explorer engine, and many users find that when starting up Skype a script error may be displayed or a warning about a slow running script. Hopefully these issues will be fixed in a future update.

Unlock iOS 4.3.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS With Ultrasn0w 1.2.1 [How To]

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 10:26 PM PDT

iPhone Dev-Team have just pushed UltraSn0w version 1.2.1 out to the public! This update does not add support for any new baseband versions it was updated simply so users on the iOS 4.3.1 firmware can use UltraSn0w to maintain their current unlock. Moreover this updated version of Ultrasn0w unlock fix signal bar issues on iOS 4.3.1 compatible iPhones, running on the old baseband.

How to Update iPhone 3GS to 06.15.00 Baseband for Unlock:

Ultrasn0w 1.2.x unlocking requires that your iPhone 3GS is jailbroken with 06.15.00 baseband. Follow the complete guide posted here (with PwnageTool) or here (for Redsn0w) to update your iPhone 3GS baseband to 06.15.00 and jailbreak it on iOS 4.1 / 4.2.1 before proceeding with the following steps.

Warning: Updating iPhone 3GS baseband to iPad's 06.15.00 might result in loss of GPS functionality.

The Steps are as follows:

Step 1: First of all you will have to jailbreak your iPhone 4 or 3GS on iOS 4.3.1 and preserve the old baseband using either PwnageTool on Mac, or Sn0wbreeze on Windows. Instructions on how to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 using PwnageTool can be found here, and for Sn0wbreeze can be found here.

Step 2: Once you are done with the jailbreak, you can now unlock your iPhone on the supported basebands using Ultrasn0w 1.2.1 from Cydia. To do this:

* Start "Cydia" on your iPhone.

* Touch on "Manage" tab on the bottom.

* Now touch on "Sources"

* Touch on "Edit" and then on "Add". You will be prompted to enter a url source as seen in the screenshot below. Type "http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com" and touch on"Add Source" to add this repo if you haven't already.

Cydia will now automatically update your sources by following a series of automated steps.

* After installation is completed. Search for "ultrasn0w 1.2.1" in Cydia and install this application. This app will automatically unlock your iPhone so that you can use it with any carrier.

Step 3: Now simply restart your iPhone and voila! you should now have a fully unlocked iPhone 4 or 3GS, running iOS 4.3.1 !

That’s it.

Updated Ultrasn0w 1.2.1 Just Released! Fixes 4.3.1 Signal Bars on Old BB

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 10:02 PM PDT

iPhone Dev-Team have just pushed UltraSn0w version 1.2.1 out to the public! As we mentioned earlier this update does not add support for any new baseband versions it was updated simply so users on the iOS 4.3.1 firmware can use UltraSn0w to maintain their current unlock.

The official word from the Dev-Team below:

We've pushed out the 4.3.1 compatibility fix for ultrasn0w in Cydia — it's now at version 1.2.1. If you're not already at 4.3.1 and you need the unlock, please be sure you understand how to get to 4.3.1 using a custom IPSW that doesn't update your baseband. There are lots of guides for this (like at iClarified.com).

This isn't a new unlock! It's to allow those who are already unlocked to use FW 4.3.1. It also fixes the signal bar issue for those who aren't using the unlock but retain an older baseband intentionally.

AFTER INSTALLING ULTRASN0W 1.2.1, PLEASE REBOOT YOUR iPHONE using the normal "slide to power off" swipe. T-Mobile users in the USA also should disable 3G mode in Settings->General->Network.

For those of you who know the drill you can find UltraSn0w 1.2.1 via Cydia!

Fix for iOS 4.3.1 Signal-Bars Issue Coming Too[MuscleNerd Confirmed]

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 09:40 PM PDT

iPhone Dev-Team has already confirmed that they will release Ultrasn0w 1.2.1. It will not only unlock all older basebands on iOS 4.3.1 but will also fix the signal-bars issue which was mainly experienced by those iPhone users who are jailbroken on iOS 4.3.1 with their old baseband preserved. This surely is an important update as users on Basebands 05.14, 05.15, 05.16 don't have any Unlock available till now.

Here’s what MuscleNerd tweeted:

From his tweet:

@hyper_trio yes the signal bar is fixed in tonight’s update (even on those without currently unlockable basebands)

Signal-Bar issue do not depends on the lock or unlock condition but it depends on what baseband you have on your iPhone running jailbroken iOS 4.3.1 on it. Even if you do not rely on an unlocked iPhone OR you have got a factory unlocked iPhone, you will still face this issue if your iPhone is jailbroken on iOS 4.3.1 and have older baseband.

Those who do not rely on an unlocked iPhone will be able to use their iPhone to make calls and do text messages but will not be able to see full signal-bars until they use the upcoming Ultrasn0w 1.2.1 patch.

You Can Downgrade iPad Baseband 06.15.00 to 05.13.04

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 09:21 PM PDT

MuscleNerd, in tweet, hints that they are working on downgrading Baseband 06.15.00 to 05.13.04. In a reply to one of his followers, Musclenerd confirmed that downgrade of iPad baseband 06.15.00 to 05.13.04 is very much possible and is 99% doable.

Downgrading iPad baseband back to 05.13.04 will not only fix battery drainage issues but will also help iPhone 3GS/3G users to fix their broken GPS.

@Kamiela2010 the downgrade potential from 06.15 remains (in my mind) 99% doable, but other things always seem to preempt working on it

In reply to:

@MuscleNerd it seems you guys have no interest in fixing gps issues with 6.15.00. Am I right??

(because the downgrade from 06.15 goal is much higher priority than explicit 05.14,05.15, or 05.16 unlock. Achieves same.)

for those at 05.14, 05.15 or 05.16 I really don't see an unlock coming. Rather, it'll be: update to 06.15, then down to 05.13

According to MuscleNerd, instead of working on the unlock of individual baseband (05.14, 05.15 or 05.16), he will devise a single downgrade method for all iPhone 3GS users running iPad baseband. In this way, those iPhone 3GS/3G users who have baseband 05.14.xx, 05.15.xx or 05.16.xx will be able to use Ultrasn0w 1.2 by first upgrading to iPad baseband and then downgrading back to the unlockable baseband 05.13.04.

So the idea is, there won't be an unlock for iPhone 3GS baseband 05.16.02, 05.14.02, or 05.15.04.Rather, dev-team is working on a method by following which, users with iPhone baseband 05.16.02, 05.14.02, or 05.15.04 will update their baseband to iPad baseband 06.15.00 and then downgrade baseband 06.15.00 to an iPhone unlockable baseband 05.13.04.

If you are waiting for the unlock of iPhone 3GS 05.14, 05.15 or 05.16 baseband then forget about it. In either way you MUST first upgrade to iPad baseband and then downgrade back to baseband 05.13.04. The best method to upgrade your iPhone 3GS to iPad baseband is by using Sn0wbreeze 2.5.1.

Fujifilm FinePix F300EXR 12MP Digital Camera

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 09:01 PM PDT

Fujifilm bring FinePix F300EXR 12MP Digital Camera with 15x Wide-Angle Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD. Encased in a beautifully sculpted black metal shell with a double coated lacquer finish and measuring only 23mm thick. The FinePix F300EXR offers a 12-megapixel EXR Super CCD, a large, 3.0-inch high-contrast 460k LCD, Intelligent Image Stabilization and HD movie capture at 720p. This is an Amazon’s product review. Checkout more detail bellow.

Product Features:
* 12-megapixel resolution with EXR technology; 15x super-wide-angle zoom (24mm-360mm equivalent)
* 720p HD movie and Micro-HDMI interface; 3.0-inch high-contrast LCD
* Hybrid High Speed AF; Intelligent Image Stabilization; Motion Panorama 360
* EXR Auto Automatic Scene Recognition; High Sensitivity ISO 12800
* Capture images and video to SD/SDHC memory cards (not included)

Technical Details:
* Brand Name: Fuji
* Model: FinePix F300EXR
* Optical Sensor Resolution: 12 MP
* Optical zoom: 15 x

Fujifilm FinePix F300EXR Highlights:

Sharp, Clear 15x Zoom Lens
The FinePix F300EXR features a Fujinon 15x Super Wide-Angle optical zoom lens that produces crisp high resolution results throughout the focal range, from 24mm wide-angle to 360mm telephoto. The lens of the FinePix F300EXR also features Super EBC Coating that keeps ghosting and flare to minimum, allowing for optimal picture quality.
Fujifilm FinePix digital camera highlights 1x zoom/ 5x zoom/ 15x zoom
EXR Sensor Technology, with Hybrid High Speed AF
The next generation EXR sensor in the FinePix F300EXR incorporates Phase Detection pixels built-in to the CCD to realize Hybrid High Speed Auto Focus. It has the ability to intelligently decide between the two focusing systems on the camera. For example, when a bright, high-contrast subject is positioned in the center of the frame, Phase Detection AF works fast and accurately; and in dark scenes, Contrast AF is employed to work accurately.

The F300EXR uses both Phase Detection AF and Contrast AF to offer fast auto focus speeds in all scenes. To achieve an incredible auto focus speed of 0.158 seconds2, Fujifilm engineers placed pairs of phase detection pixels on the EXR sensor, which work like external sensors on DSLRs. The F300EXR automatically selects the better focus system (Contrast or Phase Detection), by measuring the amount of light or contrast in the scene. The benefit for the photographer is immediate and obvious–an almost instantaneous capture of the subject in the frame, with no missed shots or subjects half out-of-frame.

Intelligent Image Stabilization
Long-zoom cameras need stabilization more than any other compact, with handshake and subject movement a particular problem in low light at telephoto range and in movie mode. With a newly enhanced gyro sensor, the new image stabilization system promises further improved image quality with reduced blurring and noise in still pictures and even when shooting movies at the full 15x optical zoom or in very low-light. The new sensor is able to overcome handshake and can compensate for both sharp and wide hand movements, therefore increasing ISO to freeze action is no longer so necessary, meaning beautifully sharp low-light pictures can be achieved at 400 ISO, rather than 800 or 1600 ISO at night scenery. The FinePix F300EXR also works to reduce blur to a minimum by deploying high ISO sensitivity to automatically increase shutter speeds, and CCD Sensor Shift Stabilization to counteract the problems of handshake. By cleverly combining these two, blur is reduced to an absolute minimum.

3.0-inch High-Contrast LCD
The FinePix F300EXR is fitted with a high contrast 460K-pixel 3.0-inch LCD. The high contrast LCD is a considerable benefit in bright light, and means that the camera can be directed at various shooting angles to enable framing of awkward shots. The LCD is bright and clear for beautiful rendition of shots in playback.
HD Movie Capture
With the ability to capture movies in HD quality 720p, the F300EXR also has a Mini HDMI Port, making it quick and easy for users to realize the full benefits of their home theater system and to share all their special moments.

Improved Pro Focus Mode
Introduced on the F70EXR, Pro Focus Mode has proved very popular with photographers. Through complex digital imaging technology, several images are combined to create a crisp shot of the subject against a defocused background and foreground. Ideal for portraits, nature photography or any subject that needs ‘lifting’ from its background, the FinePix F300EXR Pro Focus Mode provides satisfying professional results at the touch of a button. Results are even more simple to achieve as Pro Focus Mode has been now been combined with Face Detection and Face Recognition.

Motion Panorama 360 for the Perfect All-Round Shot
New to the EXR sensor, the F300EXR extends the sweep range to 360° (shots can also be taken vertically). Combined with high quality Fujifilm printing, astounding scenes can be taken, showing fine detail, low noise and high resolution at 180, 240° or a full 360° range.

Face Recognition
With Face Recognition, users can register up to eight (8) faces, along with names, birthdays and categories, and the F300EXR will prioritize focus and exposure right on the faces of those special people. Users can also use Image Search to view images of a registered person. Compared to models from other manufacturers, Fujifilm’s Face Recognition has faster recognition speed, greater number of names displayed, and the ability to recall the most often shot subject.

Tracking Auto Focus
The F300EXR also has Tracking Auto Focus, which allows users to track a moving subject automatically for still picture capture.

Additional Features

* Super Intelligent Flash The FinePix F300EXR offers a flash control system which efficiently controls the level of flash for a given exposure to produce beautifully balanced flash illumination across the foreground and background. Gone are the ugly washout shots where the subject is blasted with light and the background dark and unexposed. Super Intelligent Flash is most useful in macro photography where the contrast between subject and background can be especially challenging, but is also effective for night and backlit photography.
* EXR AUTO Technology Prized for bringing a new level of image quality to the consumer compact market, Fujifilm’s EXR technology has the unique ability to switch its behavior depending on the shooting conditions by automatically switching sensor modes. The FinePix F300EXR can be left on EXR Auto Mode and the camera will do all the hard work for you, or alternatively, you can manually select one of three EXR Priority modes for high resolution (HR), dynamic range (DR) or high sensitivity and low noise (SN).
* Face Detection and Automatic Red-eye Removal To provide perfectly exposed and focused portrait shots, the FinePix F300EXR is fitted with Fujifilm’s latest Face Detection technology which is able to track up to 10 faces simultaneously, at almost any angle to the camera. The system instantly corrects red-eye and then saves both the original and the corrected image file automatically.
* Photobook Assist Photobook Assist lets you select and organize images in your camera to create a digital photobook. You can download the photobooks to your computer using MyFinePix Studio software that is included.

That’s all about the Fujifilm FinePix F300EXR. This 12MP Digital Camera is available in Amazon.com. You can directly order or Buy form here.

Control Over LED of Blackberry With LED Notifier

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 11:05 AM PDT

The folks behind Photo Editor app for BlackBerry are back with another very useful app, LED Notifier. LED Notifier changes the color of your LED notification according to the rules you define. Now you’ll know whose message just arrived or who just called you without looking at your BlackBerry screen.

LED Notifier does exactly what Trackball Color does for Android devices. It is a very simple app that lets you customize the behavior of the BlackBerry LED light so that it can blink in different colors based on who is calling, texting or e-mailing you.

For every phone call, text message and email, you don't always have to pick up the phone to check. You can easily know exactly who is trying to reach you without needing to even pick up the phone or examining the device's screen, all thanks to the small LED that will flash different colours for different contacts.

For example:

LED Notifier can be configured to have your phone's LED blink blue when your wife calls, red for text messages from your boss and green for email from your mother. The user is provided a host of choices with this cleverly designed application.

Features:

* LED Notifier blinks a different color for incoming call/SMS/Email from a particular contact.
* LED Notifier never gets in your way; it runs silently in the background waiting for an incoming call, sms or email to inform you by flashing your BlackBerry's LED.
* You don't need to manually start LED Notifier. Once installed it will launch automatically when your phone restarts or reboots and will run silently in the background.
* LED Notifier allows you to customize the LED color for the contacts right from your BlackBerry's address book.
* You can also add numbers and email addresses that are not in your contact list but need a custom notification for them.
* You have the liberty to enable or disable the LED Notifier service whenever you want.

You can purchase LED Notifier for just $3.99.
