Palm Pre 2 Gets webOS 2.1 Update

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 03:24 AM PST

Palm Pre 2 gets official webOS 2.1 update and Classic emulator hacked to work on it.According to MotionApps, Palm was dropping the necessary ROM files out of webOS 2.0 and it was leaving the market…….

The webOS 2.1 update has started rolling out to Pre 2 phones worldwide. At the moment it's only the unlocked GSM phones that are getting the update but we can be sure a CDMA version will drop soon. The webOS 2.1 update brings features such as Exhibition, Voice Dial, other enhancements and improvements to Email, Messaging and Tasks.webOS 2.1 has already made its way to older devices like European Palm Pre Plus phones, but now it looks like it's finally making its way onto newer devices, namely the Palm Pre 2.

The old-school Palm OS emulator for webOS was so neat back during the Pre’s introduction that Palm worked closely with the developer to get it supported and available,  but when webOS 2.0 happened, Palm dropped the emulator like a hot potato by removing critical stuff from the platform’s updated libraries. Well, with some sweat, blood, and a whole lot of elbow grease, it appears that PreCentral forum members have somehow managed to get Classic working on webOS 2.1 once again. If you haven't received the notification to update yet, don't fret – it might take awhile to reach the area you're in. Let's hope CDMA and carrier-locked users won't have to wait too long before they receive the update. Let us know if you've updated your phone to webOS 2.1 and give us your feedback about the update.

Lenovo Skylight Slate Hits FCC

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 02:44 AM PST

Lenovo Skylight Slate lands at FCC offices and it could be Android 2.2 or Android 3.0 tablet.Lenovo Skylight Slate have a 1280×800 resolution screen, Snapdragon processor, Android 2.2 and 1GB of RAM, it is apparent the so-called Lenovo Skylight slate is the LePad we saw back at CES in January……..

Lenovo Skylight Slate has made an appearance at the FCC offices. A slate is the industry term for tables with a touchscreen but no physical keyboard, the term is most often tied to Windows based tablets. Although the only tablet that Lenovo has been showing that can be called a slate is the LePad Android tablet. It looks like it will be called the Lenovo Skylight slate when it goes on sale in the US. That's probably a good thing because while LePad might make sense in Chinese, in English it just seems like an odd name for a tablet.

Lenovo LePad is an interesting device because by itself it's just the LePad a 10.1-inch Android 2.2 tablet powered by a 1.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. But when the LePad is docked on it's keyboard docking base it transforms into the U1 hybrid and starts running Windows 7 Home Premium and starts to be powered by an Intel CULV processor. The tablet will have WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities and a multitouch display. It has stereo speakers, a built-in mic, and a 3-axis gravity sensor with compass support. The tablet has 1GB of RAM and a  27Whr lithium polymer battery.

Lenovo has already launched the LePad in China but release in the US and other global markets in June. The LePad when it's hits the US could in fact change names to Skylight Slate, but Lenovo hasn't made any official mention of such a move or of a product named "Skylight Slate" for that matter either. The Skylight slate looks pretty much identical to the version the company was showing off at CES in January.

Acer has developed a new monitor which is capable to access media content and web browsing without connect to a computer, naming as Acer DX241H. Also dubbed the Acer Web Surf Station, this very innovative PC monitor packs both wired and wireless networking options, and a built-in proprietary web-browser, that can be easily accessed via the remote control accompanying the display, that slides open to reveal a full-QWERTY keyboard for users to input web addresses.

It features a 24-inch Full (1920 x 1080) TN panel, a 2ms response time, an 80,000:1 contrast ratio and a maximum brightness of 300 cd.m2. It all sounds pretty regular right? All that’s required is an internet connection, either wired (a LAN port is available for that) or wireless (you need an adapter that plugs into one of the two USB 2.0 ports included).

Beside those mentioned, the DX241H has built-in speakers, D-Sub and HDMI outputs, and a media card reader. But wait, there’s more, like DLNA support and the clear.fi system which helps you share and ‘enjoy’ multimedia content (music, images, videos) found on the web, a memory card, or a USB-connected storage device.

The Acer DX241H 'web surf station' monitor is already available for pre-order with priced at €299.

Buy Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Action Figure

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 01:02 AM PST

Great news for Facebook fans, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Action figure is now available for Sale. The Action figure is called the "The Poking Inventor" to make sure you don't get sued (and screwed) by a multi-billion dollar social network. Chinese company M.I.C. Gadget is selling the lifelike Zuckerberg doll for $70 on its website.

"Facebook fanboys rejoice- the long awaited Mark Zuckerberg action figure is here! Includes such cool actions as: standing around in a hoodie, poking, staring off evasively into space, not selling your company, changing your users' privacy settings and stealing ideas from the Winklevii."

Notice that the company is calling the action figure the "Poking Inventor" and not "Mark Zuckerberg." This is because of what happened with the previous doll, the Steve Jobs action figure. The company clearly learned its lesson with the new CEO doll and named it after the fact that Facebook allows its users to poke each other.

Zite iPad Magazine Application

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 01:02 AM PST

A new alternative for your digital magazine needs has just been launched for the Apple iPad tablet and this new magazine application joins the long list of already available magazine applications in the App store……

Zite is a personalized magazine that’s being touted as a ‘Flipboard-killer‘ because of its learning capabilities. Unlike iPad publications like The Daily or Sir Richard Branson’s ‘Project,’ Zite mixes the links from your friends’ Twitter accounts and your Google Reader subscriptions with the voting and customization ideas from services like Pandora.Apps like Reeder, Flipboard and Pulse require that you bring in your own subscriptions in the form of Tweets, RSS feeds or Facebook friends. Zite claims that its recommendation system, developed by the University of British Columbia’s Laboratory for Computational Intelligence, is even smarter. Zite starts with your basic preferences and then customizes to your interests (long-form journalism, celebrity news, cats) by analyzing how you read and rate articles. Let’s dig in to see how it fares.

Fortunately, setup is easy enough. Give Zite access to your Google Reader account or Twitter username or bypass Twitter and Google Reader altogether and simply select from Zite’s pre-selected Magazine Sections which features listings on everything from World News and Science to Mac and Travel Blogs. These sections are your primary organizing tool, and you’ll find them on the right side of the app’s home screen. Interestingly, CEO Ali Davar told All Things D that Facebook’s data is too heterogeneous to reliably recommend articles.“We’ll need to use the app for a few days to get a better feel for how good the recommendation engine is, but we expect many will be turned off in just a few minutes by the app’s crushing speed issues.” Though possibly due to testing on the morning of the launch, Zite was all but unusable, burdened by 15-minute login screen load time and excruciatingly slow article and section refreshes (all on fast Wi-Fi).

Zite unique from other news readers is that it learns from what you read. From the kind of stories you click or favorite or rate u, and the stories you avoid and rate down – everything you do will affect what Zite thinks you might or might not want to read. From your behavior towards the different articles, Zite learns from it and shows you the news it thinks that you would like and doesn't load what it thinks you don't. It's a very interesting program that's said to get better with time, making it an intelligent magazine app. The app is available now for free on the Apple App Store.

The app’s suburban jewelry-dealer aesthetic is harmless enough, but the design issues are more than just cosmetic. To simply share an article in portrait mode, you’re forced to tap ‘web’ (wait), then the ‘share’ button (wait) and finally you’re only given a few sharing options. Flipboard, Pulse, Reeder and even Twitter offer one-tap sharing, Instapaper and ReaditLater options. Zite takes the Instapaper approach and visually tweaks articles by stripping out ads, site layouts and formatting for easier reading. But again, it’s a slow process. There’s clearly a need for tools like Flipboard and Zite for helping to organize and visually highlight what’s important in our ever-expanding digital streams. Applying the Pandora voting model to other media is a novel approach, but Zite won’t be replacing any of our go-to news-reading apps until it gets its crippling speed issues sorted out.

Kinect Sets Guinness World Record For Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronics Device

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 12:03 AM PST

Microsoft has released a press release of the latest Kinect sells report. According to the Guinness World Records team, Kinect, for the Xbox 360, is now officially the Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronics Device. 8 million Kinects were sold in the first two months – an average of 130,000 a day.

In January, at CES in Las Vegas, Microsoft announced that the Kinect had shipped more than 8 million units–and that Xbox 360 sales had topped 50 million.

According to the beer-backed record book, the Kinect averaged 133,333 units sold per day for a total of 8 million units between November 4, 2010, and January 3, 2011- making it the fastest selling device in its first 60 days on the market. This includes a significantly larger and faster sales t
han the iPhone and iPad in the same amount of time.

"The sales figures here speak for themselves. We can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector." – Editor of Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition, Gaz Deaves

These numbers mean MS shifted more Kinects than Apple sold iPads or iPhones during their first 60 days of being on sale.

Rumor: White iPhone 4 Coming in April

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:48 PM PST

Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told AppleInsider that official production has begun on the infamous white iPhone and we can expect it to ship in April. It was also reported that Apple is getting ready to ship the mysterious white iPhone 4 to AT&T customers.

Reports have indicated that the white iPhone 4 also had camera problems due to light leakage through the white-painted glass back panel. Apple must have fixed this problem as well if they’re planning to sell the device. For the time being, Kuo stated that Apple will only sell an AT&T version of the white iPhone 4 and did not mention a possible Verizon release date.

The white iPhone 4 was initially expected to ship alongside the black one last summer. The product was postponed more than once by Apple. Promotional materials last indicated that the white iPhone 4 would finally be available in spring 2011. Several retailers have prepared their shelves and made room in their inventory systems for the white iPhone 4. Apple will be selling the iPad 2 in white and black versions starting this Friday.

iPhone 5 Coming With Dual-core A5 Processor,iOS 4.3 Codes Indicate

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:29 PM PST

Last year, Apple introduce A4 processor with the new iPad. After few months later they they put the Apple A4 processor in the iPhone 4. This month, they introduced the Apple A5 processor with the iPad 2. So their tradition indicates that this A5 processor will also put into the upcoming iPhone 5. According to some modders who were looking around the iOS 4.3 code, it looks like the iPhone 5 will have the same Apple A5 processor as the iPad 2.

This certainly isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors of a dual-core iPhone 5 and, considering that the A5 is powering the iPad 2, it seems like a pretty safe bet that the same chip will make it into the new iPhone, too.

Sony Updated PS3 Firmware To v3.60

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:08 PM PST

Sony has just released a new update for PlayStation 3 users. The new update adds a few features and probably some more hidden security patches more hurdles for hackers to Jailbreak it. Also added is the ability to change the wait time for the system before it senses the inactivity and shuts down DualShock 3 and Sixaxis controllers.

One of the new features introduced in 3.60 update is Online Storage for Game Saves for Playstation Plus member.

Press Release:

In response to overwhelming demand from the PS3 community, we are pleased to announce that Online Storage for Game Saves will be available to PlayStation Plus members from tomorrow, 10 March, allowing you to store your game saves for peace of mind and easy access from any PlayStation 3 system in the world.

After downloading PS3 System Software Update 3.60, Plus members will have access to 150MB of space and will be able to store up to 1000 PS3 game saves.

To do so, simply highlight the game save you want to store in the [Saved Data Utility (PS3)], press the triangle button to bring up the options, select "copy" and then select "Online Storage" as the destination. In turn, you can access your Online Storage list via [Saved Data Utility (PS3)] when signed into PlayStation Network on a friend's PS3 and download your stored game saves to carry on your game from where you left off.

If the developer has chosen to implement copy protection on their game saves, you can still copy those files to Online Storage but there will be a 24 hour period, after each save, before you can then download them on any PS3.

If your PlayStation Plus subscription expires then you will no longer be able to access Online Storage until you renew your subscription. However, any game saves stored will be kept for six months and you will be able to access them as before when you renew the subscription, as long as you do so within that six month period.

Hopefully that tells you everything you need to know about this new, much requested service. If you do need any more information, the official PlayStation forums have posted a guide, and ask us in the comments as always.

iPad 2 Has Reviewed

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 09:55 PM PST

Early reviews for the iPad 2 have surfaced. Some top journal site such as Engadget, Wall Street Journal, Macworld, TechCrunch has managed to review the new iPad 2. We've already told you what key features might make you want to upgrade from iPad 1 to iPad 2, or to consider an iPad 2 as your first tablet.

Here is a summary of what these big sites have to say about iPad 2.

Mossberg – The Wall Street Journal

As new contenders move into the field, Apple isn't likely to keep its 90% share of the booming tablet market. But the iPad 2 moves the goal posts, by being slimmer and lighter, boosting speed and power, and holding its price advantages, available apps and battery life. As of now, I can comfortably recommend it as the best tablet for average consumers.

Joshua Topolsky – Engadget

It might frustrate the competition to hear this, but it needs to be said: the iPad 2 isn't just the best tablet on the market, it feels like the only tablet on the market. As much as we'd like to say that something like the Xoom has threatened Apple's presence in this space, it's difficult (if not impossible) to do that. Is the iPad 2 a perfect product? Absolutely not. The cameras are severely lacking, the screen — while extremely high quality — is touting last year's spec, and its operating system still has significant annoyances, like the aggravating pop-up notifications. At a price point of $499, and lots of options after that (like more storage and models that work on both Verizon's and AT&T's 3G networks), there's little to argue about in the way of price, and in terms of usability, apps like GarageBand prove that we haven't even scratched the surface of what the iPad can do.

For owners of the previous generation, we don't think Apple's put a fire under you to upgrade. Unless you absolutely need cameras on your tablet, you've still got a solid piece of gear that reaps plenty of the benefits of the latest OS and apps. For those of you who haven't yet made the leap, feel free to take a deep breath and dive in — the iPad 2 is as good as it gets right now. And it's really quite good.

MG Siegler – TechCrunch

In January 2010, shortly after its unveiling, I first got my hands on an iPad. My initial reaction? "The iPad is like holding the future." And that's funny because here we are, just a little over a year into that future, and something new has come along that makes holding the iPad 1 feel like holding the past: the iPad 2.

A week ago, after its unveiling, I got some hands on time with the new hardware and my initial assessment was that it pushed a device that already had no true competition even farther ahead. But now I've had the chance to actually use the thing non-stop for a week. Is my feeling the same?

Actually, it's even stronger.

The original iPad was considered a huge hit — but that was with no real competition. The iPad 2 has some competition — right now, the Xoom, and many more are coming. But I have no doubt that the iPad 2 will be an even bigger hit than the original.

Jason Snell – Macworld

For Apple's competitors in the tablet-device market, the iPad 2 is a bucket of water to the face. After more than a year of struggling to catch up to the original iPad, here's a new model that addresses many of the iPad's deficiencies, dramatically improves its speed, and doesn't cede any ground on price, features, or battery life. The iPad 2 raises the bar Apple set a year ago—and it's time for the rest of the industry to scramble again to catch up.

… the iPad 2 is a triumph, an iPad that's even more iPad than the original. And the original one was really good. The first iPad was a bolt from the blue, a device that defined an entire category, and a tough act to follow. The iPad 2 follows it with aplomb.

64GB iPhone 4 Hands-On [Video]

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 09:18 PM PST

Just a few days ago i’ve reported about the 64GB iPhone 4. But till then it seems that it was rumor. I also mention that as a rumor in my post title. Well, here we got a hands-on video of that 64GB iPhone 4 "engineering prototype" which is clearly claiming to be the real device indeed, but its now also reported that the device is still not for sale in the grey markets of Hong Kong, China, according to the MIC Gadget.

Apparently, this 64GB iPhone 4 is not for sale in grey markets of Hong Kong. The owner of this engineered prototype told us that he got it from a source who has a small quantity of these prototypes. They are definitely leaked from Foxconn's factory in Shenzhen. What's more, according to the owner, he believes that the next iPhone will bring 64GB storage capacity to users. Well, we think Apple is planning to update the iPhone 4 with small upgrades, at least featuring a new 64GB model.

An engineering prototype has found its home in M.I.C Gadgets office apparently and they have wasted no time in explicitly exposing the device's innards. Not that to-be-released "iPhone 5," this new version of Apple iPhone 4 will be enough to make the "oh so" hard time waiting bearable.

The phone doesn't show that it's a 64GB model but instead it says XXGB on the back side, just as the Gizmodo's borrowed prototype form last year, M.I.C believes this to be an actual prototype from Apple. Some signs also indicate towards it being a "prototype" like the absence of plus/minus signs on the volume control buttons and no silver ring around the camera lens, the same features which were absent from Gizmodo's piece.

M.I.C. Gadget states the owner of the prototype bought the phone from a source with a "small quantity" of these prototypes also that the phone is "definitely leaked from Foxconn's factory in Shenzhen."

All these signs and the unavailability of a white iPhone 4 anywhere else except China points towards Apple not ready to drop iPhone 5 soon.

Update On Unlocking & Jailbreaking iPhone On iOS 4.3

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 09:03 PM PST

Apple already released the much awaited update to iOS 4.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. As per i remember, in January, iPhone Dev Team had announced that the unlock for iPhone 4 will be released after iOS 4.3 is released. As usual those looking to jailbreak or unlock their devices should wait before updating to iOS 4.3.

MuscleNerd, member of the iPhone Dev Team has tweeted that things are not looking too good on the iPhone unlocking front.

He tweets:

MuscleNerd: Ultrasn0w unlockers should know the drill! Don't let iTunes trick you into installing today's 4.3 iOS. Just say no!

MuscleNerd: Sorry, there's no news on the i4 unlock for those who lost 01.59 (or never had it). It's taking longer than we wanted :(

MuscleNerd: @Cleansman there's no way for us to know. We were making great headway with one version til we realized it was SIM dependent (!)

MuscleNerd also notes that there are many possible sources for a untethered iOS 4.3 jailbreak. i0n1c, Comex, Charlie Miller, and possibly others.

If your iPhone 4 is rocking 1.59.xx baseband, YOU MUST NOT UPDATE to iOS 4.3 because that baseband can still be unlocked using Ultrasn0w 1.2.

Gameplay within Darkspore is set in the aftermath of a scientific experiment gone disastrously wrong. After unstable “Exponential DNA” (E-DNA) escaped the lab, it created mutated hordes of Darkspore creatures who — under a mysterious leader called The Corruptor — overran the galaxy. After eons of hiding in hyper-sleep, you have been awakened by your spaceship computer with a message from a long dormant computer network: E-DNA has been stabilized. Use it to upgrade a collection of Genetic Heroes and fight back against the Darkspore. Each of these has their own unique abilities that can be used in combat. Switch between each of these heroes as you play through different levels and fight different Darkspore enemies. Upgrade your heroes by collecting parts that add stats to make your heroes more powerful. Customize your heroes and parts in nearly infinite ways. Organize your heroes into squads of three, and decide which squad has the best combination of heroes to defeat the enemies on each planet you encounter. Use “squad abilities” to combine attacks from different heroes simultaneously. Play through a loot-driven campaign against the Darkspore in solo or co-op modes, as the game is designed for co-op from the ground up.
