Japan Earthquake And Tsunami

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 03:19 AM PDT

It is highly possible  that a partial meltdown was occurring in one of the nuclear reactors damaged in Friday’s powerful earthquake and by Sunday afternoon, the death toll from the country’s strongest-ever earthquake in more than a century and the crushing walls of water that followed had risen to 801.For this tsunami and earthquake up to 10,000 feared dead in Miyagi prefecture alone, cooling tem fails at a second nuclear plant, number of rescuers doubled to 100,000,190 people exposed to radiation,as a result millions without power and drinking water……..

An 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Northeast Japan spawned a ferocious tsunami that’s caused massive destruction; flattening whole cities, starting raging fires and killing hundreds. Nearly 88,000 people are reported missing, according to the official Kyodo news agency. The death toll in Japan’s earthquake and tsunami will likely exceed 10,000 in one state alone, an official said Sunday, as millions of survivors were left without drinking water, electricity and proper food along the pulverized northeastern coast.Although the government doubled the number of soldiers deployed in the aid effort to 100,000, it seemed overwhelmed by what’s turning out to be a triple disaster: Friday’s quake and tsunami damaged two nuclear reactors at a power plant on the coast, and at least one of them appeared to be going through a partial meltdown, raising fears of a radiation leak.

The police chief of Miyagi prefecture, or state, told a gathering of disaster relief officials that his estimate for deaths was more than 10,000, police spokesman Go Sugawara told The Associated Press. Miyagi has a population of 2.3 million and is one of the three prefectures hardest hit in Friday’s disaster. Only 379 people have officially been confirmed as dead in Miyagi. The nuclear crisis posed fresh concerns for those who survived the earthquake and tsunami, which hit with breathtaking force and speed, breaking or sweeping away everything in its path. The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the initial quake to have a magnitude of 8.9, while Japanese officials raised their estimate on Sunday to 9.0. Either way it was the strongest quake ever recorded in Japan. It has been followed by more than 150 powerful aftershocks.eams searched for the missing along hundreds of miles (kilometers) of Japanese coastline and hundreds of thousands of hungry survivors huddled in darkened emergency centers that were cut off from rescuers and aid. At least 1.4 million households had gone without water since the quake struck and some 2.5 million households were without electricity. Temperatures were to dip near freezing overnight.

Trade Minister Banri Kaeda said the region was likely to face further blackouts and that power would be rationed to ensure supplies go to essential needs.Large areas of the countryside remained surrounded by water and unreachable. Fuel stations were closed and people were running out of gasoline for their vehicles.Public broadcaster NHK said around 380,000 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters, many of them without power. In Iwaki town, residents were leaving due to concerns over dwindling food and fuel supplies. The town had no electricity and all stores were closed. Local police took in about 90 people and gave them blankets and rice balls but there was no sign of government or military aid trucks. At a large refinery on the outskirts of the hard-hit port city of Sendai, 100-foot (30-meter) -high bright orange flames rose in the air, spitting out dark plumes of smoke. The facility has been burning since Friday. A reporter who approached the area could hear the roaring fire from afar, and after a few minutes the gaseous stench began burning the eyes and throat.

At a small park near the refinery, trees and large swaths of grass were covered in thick black crude oil. Two large tanker trucks were jammed sideways among the trees, their gas tanks crumpled.Residents said the water surged in and quickly rose higher than the first floor of buildings. At Sengen General Hospital the staff worked feverishly to haul bedridden patients up the stairs one at a time. With the halls now dark, those that can leave have gone to the local community center. One older neighborhood sits on low ground near a canal. The tsunami came in from the canal side and blasted through the frail wooden houses, coating the interiors with a thick layer of mud and spilling their contents out into the street on the other side.Dozens of countries have offered assistance. Two U.S. aircraft carrier groups were off Japan’s coast and ready to provide assistance. Helicopters were flying from one of the carriers, the USS Ronald Reagan, delivering food and water in Miyagi.

A partial meltdown was already likely under way at one nuclear reactor, a top official said, and operators were frantically trying to keep temperatures down at the power plant’s other units and prevent the disaster from growing even worse.Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said “Sunday that a hydrogen explosion could occur at Unit 3 of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex, the reactor that could be melting down. That would follow a blast the day before in the power plant’s Unit 1, as operators attempted to prevent a meltdown by injecting sea water into it.however, there would be no significant impact on human health.” More than 170,000 people had been evacuated as a precaution, though Edano said the radioactivity released into the environment so far was so small it didn’t pose any health threats.

Up to 160 people, including 60 elderly patients and medical staff who had been waiting for evacuation in the nearby town of Futabe, and 100 others evacuating by bus, might have been exposed to radiation, said Ryo Miyake, a spokesman from Japan’s nuclear agency. The severity of their exposure, or if it had reached dangerous levels, was not clear. They were being taken to hospitals.Japan struggled with the nuclear crisis as it tried to determine the scale of the Friday disasters, when an 8.9-magnitude earthquake, the most powerful in the country’s recorded history, was followed by a tsunami that savaged its northeastern coast with breathtaking speed and power.Rescue teams were struggling to search hundreds of miles (kilometers) of devastated coastline, and thousands of hungry survivors huddled in darkened emergency centers cut off from rescuers and aid. At least a million households had gone without water since the quake, and food and gasoline were quickly running out across the region. Large areas of the countryside were surrounded by water and unreachable. Some 2.5 million households were without electricity.

Officials were aware that the steam contained hydrogen and were risking an explosion by venting it, acknowledged Shinji Kinjo, spokesman for the government’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, but chose to do so because they needed to keep circulating cool water on the fuel rods to prevent a meltdown. To cool the reactor fuel, operators needed to keep circulating more and more cool water on the fuel rods. But the temperature in the reactor vessel apparently kept rising, heating the zirconium cladding that makes up the fuel rod casings. If the temperature inside the Fukushima reactor vessel rose further, to roughly 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,200 Celsius), then the uranium fuel pellets would start to melt. But once the zirconium reached 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit (1,200 Celsius), it reacted with the water, becoming zirconium oxide and hydrogen. When the hydrogen-filled steam was vented from the reactor vessel, the hydrogen reacted with oxygen, either in the air or water outside the vessel, and exploded.According to experts interviewed by The Associated Press, any melted fuel would eat through the bottom of the reactor vessel. Next, it would eat through the floor of the already-damaged containment building. At that point, the uranium and dangerous byproducts would start escaping into the environment.

Hulu For Android

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 01:37 AM PST

Google smartphone users been largely unable to access their favorite Hulu programs on the go,Hulu for Android coming soon and destined for select phones with Android 2.2, no firm release date yet…..

Adobe Flash made its way to Android smartphones, but unfortunately that did not grant access to Flash-based Hulu TV on Android phones and tablets. The good news is that this appears set to change very soon.According to Engadget, an eagle-eyed Engadget reader spotted this image at the company’s website, depicting a most unusual combo: an image of a Samsung Nexus S (which comes with Android 2.3) and a suggestion that Hulu Plus will be soon available on a subset of devices running Android 2.2.While it is still unknown which Android 2.2 phones will be getting Hulu Plus access, hints at CES by LG suggest that only Android phones which have DRM supported processors will be entitled access to Hulu and its protected content. No word yet on the future of Hulu and Google TV and at this point all we can say is that $100-off Google Nexus S deal currently available at Best Buy.

USB Host Mode On Motorola Xoom

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 11:59 PM PST

Motorola Xoom gets USB host functionality and no thanks to Motorola or Google. This hack  granting Xoom owners the ability to read media from USB drives and essentially giving you a limitless amount of storage for provided you own the necessary microUSB OTG (on-the-go) cable and a rooted Xoom………

Motorola XOOM has a microSD card slot, but since it’s not currently enabled for end user use one has to make due with the 32GB of on board storage that Motorola has included.A  method of enabling USB host capabilities on the Motorola XOOM is available to anyone who is either wanting to or already has rooted their device. You’ll need to follow the instructions carefully and need an OTG cable in order for it to work but that’s all minor pieces of the puzzle at this point. The hard work has already been laid out for you.he installation is a bit involved, however. Flashing the file will take you to stock Android 3.0.1 and will unroot and re-lock your device. This tells VOLD where to mount the device, when it’s plugged in. After the change, you need to reboot. The altered boot.img adds a folder called /usbdisk, so that way if you connect a USB thumb drive using the cable I linked to above, it will automount the thumb drive and you can access files.

How To Root And Unlock Motorola Xoom:

  1. Download the XOOM root zip.
  2. Unzip the package.
  3. Put your junk in the box.
  4. adb reboot bootloader (skip the next 3 steps if you have already unlocked via fastboot)
  5. fastboot oem unlock
  6. wait for reboot
  7. adb reboot bootloader
  8. fastboot flash boot rootboot.img
  9. fastboot reboot
  10. wait for reboot
  11. adb remount
  12. adb push su /system/bin/
  13. adb shell ln –s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su
  14. adb shell chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
  15. adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/

Instructions Of USB Host Mode On Motorola Xoom:

  • You'll need the Android SDK for this.  You should already have it if you unlocked though.
  • Download this file to your computer:  HRI39.zip (you may have to register)
  • Extract the contents into your Android SDK Tools folder.
  • Open a command prompt from within your Android SDK Tools folder.
  • Make sure nothing is selected and hold SHIFT+Right click – select “Open command window here.”
  • Type:  adb reboot bootloader
  • Type:  fastboot flash boot boot.img
  • Type:  fastboot flash system system.img
  • Type:  fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
  • Type:  fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
  • Type:  fastboot erase cache
  • Type:  fastboot oem lock
  • Your XOOM will now re-lock and you should be ready for the update.

VASIMR Plasma Rocket In Space

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 11:06 PM PST

NASA and Ad Astra team up to test VASIMR plasma rocket in space and NASA is becoming besties with Ad Astra, makers of the VASIMR VX-200 plasma rocket.VASIMR VX-200 plasma rocket was assumed to be destined for use on the International Space Station because it requires far less fuel than conventional boosters…….

Ad Astra Rocket Company and NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) have signed a Support Agreement to collaborate on research, analysis and development tasks on space-based cryogenic magnet operations and electric propulsion systems currently under development by Ad Astra. The agreement was signed on March 2, 2011 by NASA-JSC Director of Engineering, Mr. Stephen J. Altemus and Ad Astra’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Franklin R. Chang Diaz. The Support Agreement is the fourth entered into by the parties under an Umbrella Space Act Agreement, executed in December of 2007. That document established the basic framework for collaboration and serves as host to support agreements, such as this one, that define specific tasks and objectives to be accomplished over a certain period.

NASA will work with a firm started by a former astronaut to build a spaceworthy plasma drive capable of revolutionising travel beyond Earth orbit. However it appears that the space tests may not take place aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as had been planned.Ad Astra Rocket Company, headed by Dr Franklin Chang Díaz. has already built an experimental prototype version of its Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR). The VX-200, (VASIMR eXperimental 200 kilowatt) unit works fine in a vacuum chamber on Earth. Now Ad Astra has announced an agreement under which it will work in partnership with NASA to produce the VF-200 flight version, which has long been planned for installation aboard the International Space Station. The VASIMR works by squirting stuff out of its exhaust just as a normal rocket does: the difference is that it does so much more violently, hurling its argon reaction mass out as a plasma hot as the interior of the Sun and moving at better than 50 kilometres per second. This means that VASIMR gets a lot more poke out of a given mass of propellant than ordinary chemical rockets possibly can: though unlike them it needs electrical power to work.

The VASIMR isn’t any use for getting into space in the first place as its power-to-weight ratio is small: the VX-200, the size of a small car, can only produce enough thrust to lift half a kilogramme or so off the ground.A normal rocket will burn up any practical amount of fuel very quickly: thus it can be used only in brief bursts. A spacecraft driven by such means must spend almost all its time coasting along unpowered. Thus a journey to Mars for instance, would take 6 months for a conventional spacecraft.A VASIMR, however, can keep on exerting its relatively tiny push for weeks on end without using any more juice, gradually boosting a ship up to terrific speeds that would never be possible with a chemical rocket. VASIMR ships could get to Mars in just 39 days.

Short for Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket, VASIMR works with plasma, an electrically charged gas that can be heated to extreme temperatures by radio waves and controlled and guided by strong magnetic fields. The magnetic field also insulates any nearby structure, so temperatures well beyond the melting point of materials can be achieved. The plasma can be harnessed to produce propulsion. In rocket propulsion, the higher the temperature of the exhaust gases, the higher their velocity and hence the higher their fuel efficiency. Plasma rockets feature exhaust velocities far above those achievable by their chemical cousins, so their fuel consumption is extremely low.

The station is a good fit for VASIMR as it has vast solar-panel arrays the largest ever placed in space and thus there is considerable electrical power available on board, up to 250 kW. The station could muster enough juice at times to run the VF-200 at full bore and really try it out properly. But now we learn that the VF-200 may not in fact go to the station, but instead fly in some other flight platform. This could be bad news for a really comprehensive test programme, as today’s spacecraft don’t have enough juice to really put a 200 kW machine through its paces. Even powerful communications satellites don’t generally dispose of more than 15 kW or so. A large, costly (and correspondingly heavy, thus expensive to launch) solar array would probably be required for any free-flyer non-ISS option.

The other option for long-term power generation in space is nuclear, but this too is so far quite limited in output. Soviet radar-ocean-reconnaissance satellites carried Topaz reactors which could generate several kilowatts of electricity: they were the most powerful nuclear units so far flown. US nuke boffins have developed a space reactor, the SAFE-400, that could produce 100kW of electricity (two of these and the VF-200 could easily be lifted right up to geosynchronous transfer orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9) but it has never been used. The fact is that even the launch of comparatively simple and low powered radioisotope-decay power units (as opposed to reactors proper) often draws a lot of technofear protest, and the bureaucracy and expense associated with spaceflight-rated nuclear technology is immense. Chang Díaz has always suggested – in common with most serious analysts – that flight beyond Earth orbit, or anyway beyond the Earth-Moon system, can’t ever become a serious activity without the use of nuclear power. Even so, his chances of getting a nuclear powerplant for the inaugural VF-200 trial flight would seem slim.

Xbox 360 IPTV

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 10:28 PM PST

Xbox 360 getting new IPTV services this year with a name of “Project Orapa”, would be available on 360 before moving to Windows, Windows Phone 7 and a set-top box.The service will have all of the social aspects of Xbox Live such as avatars, Kinect controls and as yet unannounced music services will all be incorporated…….

Currently, the only TV streaming on the Xbox 360 comes courtesy of the Sky Player app.But all that could be set to change soon, with Microsoft reportedly prepping a fully blown IPTV service of its own.According to  ZDNet, Microsoft may be adding some new features to IPTV on the Xbox 360. The various tipsters specifically named “Orapa“  a Botswanan city known for its enormous diamond mine as the codename for said project. Allegedly, Microsoft has plans to combine Xbox Live and its Mediaroom IPTV service, said to be heading to the Xbox 360 first with Windows/Windows Phone 7/set-top box following.Orapa is said to incorporate “Xbox Live social features (like Avatars and recommendations),” and “Kinect sensing capabilities,” as well as another rumored Microsoft project a video/music service codenamed Ventura. The idea is to get your Xbox LIVE avatar involved in the setup, throw in a bit of Kinect-based motion control action and also introduce social aspects such as recommendations and instant messaging. The report suggests that Orapa could come to life by Christmas 2011.

EX Trike

EX trike powered by dual electric screwdrivers and designed by eccentrics.EX trike custom-built three-wheeler is powered by two electric screwdrivers and can hurtle one brave soul headfirst down the road at speeds up to 30km/h……..

In what can only be described as over-engineering run amok, this custom-built three-wheeler is powered by two electric screwdrivers and can hurtle one brave soul headfirst down the road at speeds up to 30km/h (almost 19mph for those using real units of measure). The joint connecting the front and rear portions of the frame lets riders steer with “organically floating movement” that leans the driver into every turn hopefully the handling is a bit more predictable than the trike’s design.Excentricity is defined as a deviation from what is ordinary or customary.Designer just modify an existing vehicle but had to start designing something new from scratch. The result is a completely new driving concept: The driver lies headlong on his three-wheeled vehicle and accelerates the “EX” with sprawled out arms up to 30 km/h. Eccentrically is also how the steering works: A specially developed joint tilts the back wheel and leans the driver´s weight dynamically into the curve.

The vehicle was built and designed in cooperation with Sebastian Auray, Ruben Faber and Ludolf von Oldershausen. The driver controls the vehicle with brake and gas handles and by tilting the back wheel with its body. The headlong position gives you an exiting driving experience. Both screwdrivers run in the same direction to get the maximum power out of them.To avoid one screwdriver blocking the other, overrunning clutch gearwheels are used to transmit the torque.Steering with the spine-shaped joint is very different from holding a steering wheel or handle bar. You have to use your whole body to tilt and bend the vehicle. After going through numerous tests and models, the joint´s individual parts were CNC milled.Modified bicyle parts are used for most of the drive components.Instead of hiding all mechanical parts under a bodywork everything is left uncovered to show how the vehicle works:A skeleton with its organs was the inspiration for this design.

Bridgelux Silicon LED

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 07:25 AM PST

Bridglux demonstrates dramatic advancements in Gan-On-Silicon technology for solid state lighting.Bridgelux silicon LED could lead to brighter, more affordable solid state lighting and by growing gallium nitride on low-cost silicon wafers, as opposed to the typical sapphire and silicon carbide substrates, the company has achieved an output of 135lm/W (lumens per watt) with a color correlated temperature of 4730K……..

Bridgelux Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of LED lighting technologies and solutions announced that it has achieved a major breakthrough with the demonstration of 135 Lumens per Watt GaN-on-Silicon based LED Technology. This represents the industry's first commercial grade performance for a Silicon-based LED.When grown at scale, most LED epitaxial wafers use sapphire or silicon carbide substrates as the starting material. But large diameter sapphire and silicon carbide substrates are costly, difficult to process and not widely available.  As a result, production costs have inhibited the widespread adoption of LED lighting in homes and commercial buildings. But growing GaN on larger, low-cost silicon wafers that are compatible with modern semiconductor manufacturing can deliver a 75% improvement in cost over current approaches.

The 135 Lumen per Watt performance was achieved at a CCT of 4730K using a single 1.5mm power LED operated at 350mA.  These LEDs have extremely low operating voltages, requiring just 2.90V at 350mA and <3.25V at 1 Amp.  The low forward voltage and excellent thermal resistance of the devices make them ideally suited for high-performance, illumination-grade applications.  Optimization of the epitaxy process on 8-inch Si wafers will make LED manufacturing compatible with existing automated semiconductor lines. The move to a Silicon substrate will be a revolutionary step for the LED industry and Bridgelux is well- positioned to take full advantage of the introduction of this technology. Over the past 5 years, Dr. Steve Lester, one of the industry's pioneers in LED Research and Development, has fostered a world-class team of Bridgelux materials scientists and chip design engineers dedicated to GaN-on-Silicon R&D.  Concurrently, industry-wide research and development of GaN growth on Silicon has increased rapidly.  And as a result, the GaN on Silicon performance levels reported by Bridgelux today are comparable to state-of-the-art sapphire-based LEDs available 12-24 months ago. The company anticipates the delivery of its first commercially available GaN-on-Silicon products over the course of the next two to three years.

Bridgelux, which maintains an asset-light operating model will leverage its strong R&D and Intellectual Property position in LED epitaxy to jointly manufacture silicon based LEDs.  The company is currently in discussions with a number of established semiconductor companies regarding the utilization of the many fully depreciated 8-inch semiconductor fabrication operations available around the globe."Bridgelux's achievement is a significant reflection of the strength of our leadership in Silicon materials and epitaxial process technology, said Bill Watkins, Bridgelux CEO. "The significantly reduced cost-structures enabled by Silicon-based LED technology will continue to deliver dramatic reductions in the up-front capital investment required for solid state lighting. In as little as two to three years, even the most price-sensitive markets, such as commercial and office lighting, residential applications, and retrofit lamps will seamlessly and rapidly convert to solid state lighting."
