Qatar 2022 World Cup Stadium Getting Artificial Cloud Shade

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 05:17 AM PDT

Qatar's won the right to host the 2022 World Cup finals. The small Middle Eastern country beat bids from Australia, the United States and 2004 World Cup co-hosts Japan and South Korea. A Qatar-based engineering teacher has unveiled a design of an artificial cloud to shade and cool the open playgrounds to be used during the 2022 World Cup in Doha.

When FIFA announced few months ago that Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup football tournament, experts slammed the world's football governing body for choosing Qatar as the host because the climate of the Middle Eastern nation is too hot to play an energy-sapping game like football.

The engineering department at Qatar University, headed by Dr. Saul Abdul Ghani, recently announced the addition of an artificial cloud-like shade for the stadium.

The cloud is said to be made up of a hundred percent light carbonic materials and has four engines that run on solar power. It can also be positioned to hover anywhere over the stadium via a remote control.

“Artificial cloud will move by remote control, made of 100 per cent light carbonic materials, fuelled by four solar-powered engines and it will fly high to protect direct and indirect sun rays to control temperatures at the open playgrounds,” he told the local Arabic media.

Abdul Ghani said the initial model of the cloud cost $500,000 but the cost will decrease upon launching commercial models which could also be used at beaches and car parkings by using the mobile phone.

Infrared transmission works by sending out infrared light signals from the transmitter to the headphones. Infrared signals are resistant to external noise and interference, but the headphones must be within line of sight of the transmitter–the signal can’t pass through walls, furniture, or other obstacles.

That said, these phones offer a 24-foot transmission range, for listening enjoyment throughout the room, and a 90° transmission angle (maximum) for uninterrupted listening as you move around.

A convenient mute function lets you temporarily suspend audio, and the simple controls include an automatic power switch and single volume control.

Lightweight, Comfortable Design
Wear the MDR-IF240RK phones comfortably for hours on end, thanks to a lightweight construction, wide headband, and open-air design that lets you continue to hear ambient sound.

Geohot (George Hotz) Ran Away to SA

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 02:16 AM PDT

According to the recent report of VGHQ, Geohot has run away to South Africa after the court's verdict in favor of Sony in which court orders Geohot to hand over all his gadgets and storage devices to Sony. But apparently this isn't true and he's just on holiday there.

You can find the official document here and read below for some important part.

Though the evidence establishing personal jurisdiction is already overwhelming, SCEA has little doubt that there is much more. However, over the last several weeks. Hotz has engaged in a campaign to thwart jurisdictional discovery at every turn –regardless of whether the Court has ordered such discovery or not. Most seriously, after Magistrate Judge Spero ordered an inspection of Hotz's devices and ordered Hotz to appear at a deposition in California, SCEA learned that Hotz had deliberately removed integral components of his impounded hard drives prior to delivering them to a third party neutral and that Hotz is now in South America, an excuse for why he will not immediately provide the components of his hard drives as requested by the neutral. Hotz's attempts to dodge this Court's authority raise very serious questions.

This one about him lying about having a PSN account:

On January 12, 2011, Hotz submitted a declaration to the Court (Docket No. 19-1) in which he made unequivocal statements on a number of topics. However, when it came to discussing the PSN account, Hotz equivocated, stating: "To the best of my knowledge and belief, I do not have a PlayStation Network account." Hotz also provided interrogatory responses that he has refused to verify, stating that he has not accessed the PSN. Bricker Decl. ¶4.Hotz identified four PS3 Systems in his possession. Bricker Decl., ¶4, Exh. C. He explained that he had purchased one of these consoles new in February 2010 and provided the serial number for that console. Id. SCEA used that serial number to determine that on February 25, 2010, Hotz purchased the PS3 System at a Gamestop store just miles from his home. Law Decl., ¶6; Bricker Decl., ¶6, Exh. E. SCEA's records show that the same PS3 System was used on March 10, 2010 to create a PSN account under the user name "blickmanic." Law Decl., ¶6, Exh. A. The IP address associated with the registration is located in Glen Rock, New Jersey, where Hotz lives.

SCEA revealed more evidence in regards to the PSN account:

Hotz's ownership of the "blickmanic" account is further supported by the fact that an Internet search of the user name "blickmanic" reveals a posting discussing the jailbreaking of cellular phones – Hotz's original "claim to fame." Bricker Decl., ¶7, Exh. F ("Just curious what people would pay for exclusive rights to this solution. [Motorola] Tracfone W175g unlocked and debranded. PM me.") As discussed above, to create his PSN account, Hotz was required to first agree to the terms of the PSN User Agreement and thus he is clearly subject to personal jurisdiction in California. It is well established that a valid and enforceable forum selection clause operates as consent to personal jurisdiction in a designated forum.

SCEA really are desperate to get him on California:

Although Hotz's PSN account registration clearly establishes jurisdiction, even without it, SCEA has shown the necessary minimum contacts between Hotz and California.

It means that Geohot knew well all terms and conditions and had agreed upon by signing PSN account before using PSN and jailbreaking PS3 firmware. That is why Sony has a firm belief that it could teach Geohot a horrible lesson.

By June 30 Book and Case Listing Hint At 4 Inch iPhone 5

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 01:51 AM PDT

9to5Mac cites Italian blog as the source for the screen size claims. An Italian-language blog MetaBlog.it that apparently spotted a Michal Kors-designed leather case listed at the online Apple store. The blog speculates how a slight difference between product images gives away a larger screen rumored to debut with iPhone 5. Or it could just be an angle thing.

"I don't know, to me these hand-made cases look of exactly the same shape and size. The other tip was sent in by our reader Guillaume who spotted an iPhone 5 book listing on Amazon, slated for release on June 30, 2011. "I'm not going to play the speculation game, but I thought it was interesting," he writes."

SHAtter Exploit Updated for iPad 2 Jailbreak, GreenPois0n Update Also Coming Soon

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 01:30 AM PDT

Yesterday i’ve posted about a Tweet from P0sixninja, who is currently heading Chronic Dev Team stating that there are HUGE changes coming soon for the iPhone Dev Team and they are all very excited. But today Vincent has mentioned that the Chronic Dev Team fixed SHAtter for A5 processor based devices.

Here’s what he has tweeted:

Another Chronic Dev Team member, iH8sn0w has tweeted back mentioning that the Veeence tweet is False and we should not believe it.

But if this tweet of Vincent is anything to go by, Chronic Dev Team might have found a way or two to get SHAtter to work on A5-based iPad 2. Though for an untethered jailbreak, a userland based jailbreak exploit will be needed, which Comex is said to be working on.

AirPlay Video Streaming Coming Soon To HDTVs

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 12:10 AM PDT

2011 is a big year for Airplay devices. Bloomberg have reported that AirPlay might make its way into HDTVs, as Apple is allegedly in talks with major HDTV makers, to allow them to use the technology, and allow users to stream movies and TV shows directly to their TVs.

Native AirPlay support in HDTVs would allow iOS-powered devices, as well as computers running iTunes, to push content directly to the screen, without having to use a third party device, or an Apple TV. While the move could potentially hurt Apple TV sales, the revenue loss would most likely be offset by the revenue generated by additional movies and shows purchased by iOS and iTunes users able to use AirPlay directly on their TV.

While the move will most likely hurt Apple TV sales, enabling HDTVs to support AirPlay natively would most likely help Apple sell more content than ever, and should generate a revenue boost large enough to compensate potentially weakened Apple TV sales. Moreover, Apple would charge HDTV makers a fee of at least $4 per unit to allow them to offer AirPlay to their customers.

According to the report, the first TV models to support AirPlay should be released later this year.

Apple Struggling To Meet The Demands of iPad 2

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 11:58 PM PDT

Apple is struggling to meet the demand for its recently launched iPad 2. It may also be suffering from supply-related issues, as several parts used within the device – including its touch panel – come from Japan, a country recently affected by earthquakes and tsunamis.DigiTimes reported Wednesday that Apple has been in talks with Taiwan-based component makers about touch panel pricing, and the Cupertino, Calif., company has allegedly considered some price increases in negotiations.

Capacity shortages in Taiwan are not Apple's only supply chain problem. Apple may also be forced to ramp up additional vendors for the iPad 2 due to product constraints caused by the recent earthquake in Japan. Based on a recent iPad 2 tear down by iHS iSuppli, Apple currently sources five key components from Japanese manufactures impacted by the earthquake.

iHS iSuppli found the iPad 2 contained a compass from AKM Semiconductor, the main battery from Apple Japan, touch screen glass from Asahi Glass, DRAM from Elpida Memory and NAND from Toshiba.

Apple allegedly plans to build 40 million of its popular iPad in 2011. In order to reach that goal, and keep up with crushing demand for the iPad 2, Apple has reportedly booked more than 60 percent of the total global supply chain touch panel capacity.

Concern over touch panel supply has grown since the earthquake and tsunami disaster struck in Japan. Last week, it was said that Apple’s manufacturing partner, Foxconn, has two to three weeks’ worth of components stockpiled. Should the situation in Japan not improve by that time, Foxconn could reportedly face a stockout.

Even before the disaster in Japan, Apple’s control of the lion’s share of the global touch panel market has been predicted to squeeze the company’s competitors throughout 2011. Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook revealed in January that his company committed $3.9 billion toward secret long-term component contracts, money believed to be directed toward touch panel displays.

Firefox Mobile 4 RC for Android and Maemo Is Available For Download

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 11:05 PM PDT

Beside the release of Firefox 4 final version, Mozilla has also released the RC version of Firefox for Android and Maemo on the Android Market. This release candidate come after many alpha and beta revisions. This RC version has so many improvements in it like faster scrolling, text re-formatting on zoom, copy past feature, responsive to Firefox Sync, Speed and rendering is also much faster in it.

The first alpha version of Firefox Mobile 4 was release in April of 2011. The company called in Fennec, not Firefox. That was totally a nightmare for mobiles due to so many bugs. That also use to crash the OS of mobile so many times after the installation and was consuming so much power. The company worked really hard on Fennec and then released the beta version with a lot of improvements.

One major advantage of Firefox Mobile over the Stock Android browser and Opera Mobile 11 is the support for extensions. Right now, there are more than 150 add-ons available for Firefox Mobile.

The only downside of Firefox Mobile is that at the moment it does not support Flash. This is quite a major letdown considering Flash support is a very big plus of the Android OS over iOS. In fact, Opera Mobile 11 for Android also supports Flash.

The Firefox 4 RC for mobile is available now in the Android Market and for Maemo devices such as the Nokia N900. If there are no significant bugs found, Mozilla will release the final version soon.

Download Firefox Mobile 4 RC.

Download Google Chrome 11 Beta

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 10:53 PM PDT

Google has released the latest version of its Chrome browser in beta form. Google Chrome 11 beta is ready to download or upgrade. It is having new features like Voice-to-Text capability where one can speak on microphone and the browser will recognize the words and type that for the user.

Chrome 11 beta is also having a new icon of Chrome. The new icon was in news since last few days and finally it is visible on the browser on bottom-left corner of new blank page.

Google's Chrome Blog adds that the HTML5 speech input API is the result of work that Google has been undertaking with the HTML5 Speech Incubator Group. According to the group, its mission is to investigate the feasibility of integrating speech technology into HTML5. The GPU-accelerated 3D CSS function brings with it support for website designers who wish to add elements on their websites in three-dimensional space. The new version of Chrome also accelerates this feature by off-loading some of the processing power required to display 3D elements to the GPU.

According to Google Chrome blog:

Today, we're updating the Chrome beta channel with a couple of new capabilities, especially for web developers. Fresh from the work that we've been doing with the HTML Speech Incubator Group, we've added support for the HTML5 speech input API. With this API, developers can give web apps the ability to transcribe your voice to text. When a web page uses this feature, you simply click on an icon and then speak into your computer's microphone.

You can try Voice-to-Text feature on demo page of the Google Chrome. Actually the page is a part of slider and you can use right or left arrow on keyboard to navigate. Regarding the Voice-to-Text feature, it is really goof addition in Chrome browser but the voice recognition in not 100% correct.

Download Chrome 11 beta.

For the first time, market researchers will be able to capture the highest quality data on consumers’ deep subconscious responses in real time wirelessly, revolutionizing mobile in-store market research and media consumption at home. NeuroFocus has also commenced building the world’s first full-brain home panels in addition to its labs. The European Tools for Brain-Computer Interaction consortium (TOBI) will utilize Mynd as their core platform to develop practical, medical-grade technology that will improve the quality of life for people with neurological disabilities.

“While developing Mynd, we focused on achieving medical-grade scientific precision along with extraordinary ease of use and aesthetics. This neuromarketing breakthrough provides new opportunities for our clients to gain critical knowledge and insights into how consumers perceive their brands, products, packaging, in-store marketing, and advertising at the deep subconscious level in real time,” said Dr. A. K. Pradeep, Chief Executive Officer of NeuroFocus. “We are also delighted that TOBI has embraced our approach by adopting our wireless headset for their research in patients with devastating neurological disorders such as spinal cord damage and stroke,” continued Dr. Pradeep.By gaining mobility without sacrificing medical-grade technology, the lightweight, sleekly-designed Mynd opens up new testing environments to consumers beyond the lab, such as the home, outdoor venues, movie theaters, shopping malls and auditoriums with data being streamed to platforms, including the iPad, iPhone and other smart devices.

Mynd has undergone rigorous development and testing procedures for three years. The standards set for the device to meet included performance levels as accurate and reliable as gel-based, wired EEG systems used in clinical settings for a host of neurological disorders, as well as high durability and serviceability. NeuroFocus will be rolling out the Mynd headset throughout its neurological testing laboratories in the U.S., the UK/Europe, the Asia/Pacific region, Latin America, and the Middle East. The headset will also be deployed in the company’s NeuroLabs, dedicated neurological testing facilities which NeuroFocus designs, builds, staffs, and operates for individual client companies.NeuroFocus employs high-density arrays of medical grade EEG sensors to measure across the full brain. Each sensor captures brainwave activity at 2,000 times a second. The company also applies eye-tracking technology to identify the location of visual focus at the pixel level.

Key highlights of Mynd include:

  • Full-brain coverage with dense-array EEG (electroencephalographic) sensors. Full-brain measurement is the universal neuroscientific standard applied in the world’s premier laboratories and educational institutions.
  • Within seconds of slipping the user-friendly headset on, a consumer’s brainwave activity is captured across the full cortex.
  • Wireless transmission of brainwave signals; capable of interfacing with any Bluetooth-enabled mobile communications device.
  • Dry smart electrodes (sensors), eliminating the use of gels and enhancing signal quality by introducing novel technological breakthroughs.
  • Enables first full-brain coverage home panels for market research.
  • Comfortable, lightweight, aesthetically pleasing modular design with easily-replaceable sensors.

“Mynd represents an authentic breakthrough in brainwave measurement technology and I am especially pleased that it will also be used to help people with neurological disabilities such as paralysis overcome some of their most difficult barriers. This is a truly compelling example where a technology developed for business-to-business applications like neuromarketing can add enormous value to other avenues of life,” said Dr. Robert T. Knight, Director of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, and NeuroFocus’ Chief Science Advisor, said.Dr. Gerwin Schalk, Research Scientist, Wadsworth Center, Neural Injury & Repair, and developer of BCI 2000, the main technological platform used for brain-computer interaction worldwide for treatment of paralysis, cited the landmark aspect of Mynd: “This wireless dry electrode headset substantially reduces the cost and expertise necessary to access signals from the brain, which has profound implications for clinical and commercial applications of EEG technology.”

iOS 4.3 brought many new features such as personal hotspot support and a new super-fast JavaScript engine. However, many users have reported about poor battery life after iOS 4.3 upgrade. According to the report of BGR, the upcoming iOS update –iOS 4.3.1 – may help users affected by the battery life issue.

One of our Apple connects just installed the unreleased and unseen iOS 4.3.1 build on one of our iPhones, and we've been playing around with it for a couple days.

… it really does look as if iOS 4.3.1 will simply fix bugs, hence the version numbering. Battery life seems a tad bit better, though that's not scientific at all.

The owner of iPhone also told that iOS 4.3.1 will not bring some thing really new but it will just fix some bugs in iOS 4.3.1. Moreover, he also claimed that it will be available within one to two weeks. Here is the full list of expected features of iOS 4.3.1 (Unofficial).

* Fixed iPad 2 jailbreak vulnerability.
* files from USIM file system
* Baseband updates for the 3GS and iPad (original)
* Fixed issue with the Springboard and 3rd party apps not recognizing the gyroscope on the iPad 2
* Fixed problem with NTLM authentication in apps and on websites
* Fixed memory hang that results in memory corruption when reading large3.

Apple is expected to push this update within one to two weeks. There is no word on whether this release will also bring Verizon iPhone 4 users on the updated 4.3.x firmware version.

x-Ar Exoskeleton Arm

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 11:14 AM PDT

The world’s first exoskeletal arm support system debuts at the applied ergonomics conference, Held in Orlando, Florida, March 21-24 and Pioneered by Equipois Inc. is the creator of the award-winning zeroG arm, the x-Ar is poised to revolutionize jobs where people work with arms outstretched………….

Equipois Inc., designer and manufacturer of the zeroG mechanical arm technology debuted he x-Ar, the world’s first exoskeletal arm support system for manual tasks, at the Applied Ergonomics Conference in Orlando, Florida. Designed to assist with a wide range of activities in industries where people work with their arms outstretched for long periods of time, the x-Ar simply attaches to a human’s arm and becomes, in essence, a formidable mechanical arm, providing dynamic support throughout the user’s range of motion, while significantly minimizing fatigue and discomfort.“We believe that the human hand guided by the human brain is the most powerful and versatile tool ever created. The x-Ar enhances that tool, rather than trying to mimic or replace it, and should significantly impact the workplace across diverse industries.”
“The x-Ar is the first technology that utilizes an exoskeleton to increase the human arm’s stamina and strength,” said Eric Golden, President and CEO of Equipois. “We believe that the human hand guided by the human brain is the most powerful and versatile tool ever created. The x-Ar enhances that tool, rather than trying to mimic or replace it, and should significantly impact the workplace across diverse industries.”

Brian Hernandez, Environmental Health & Safety Manager for Ceradyne Corporation said, “We tested x-Ar as part of the pilot program. It is truly a unique technology. The x-Ar is a great tool to reduce stress and fatigue associated with work-related repetitive motion tasks involving the arms, wrists, shoulders, and neck. The use of x-Ar in these high exposure ergonomic areas could greatly improve and contribute to a reduction in work related sprains, strains, and other musculoskeletal disorders associated with work related repetitive motion injuries.”The x-Ar is a descendent of Equipois’s successful zeroG mechanical arm technology, which holds tools and parts enabling operators to manipulate them as if weightless, but with practically unlimited freedom of motion. zeroG has been adopted as a best practice by some of the world’s top manufacturing companies and has earned Equipois numerous honors, including being named “Most Innovative Company in North America” by 2010 International “Stevie” Awards. zeroG eliminates workplace injuries and boosts productivity, with an annual ROI up to 500%.

The technology driving both the zeroG and x-Ar product lines was invented by Garrett Brown, inventor of the Steadicam camera stabilization system. The Steadicam revolutionized the movie and television industries by allowing camera operators to achieve shots never thought possible. Equipois believes that the x-Ar will change the way people work in a broad range of industries, from manufacturing to health care to bioresearch. The company also has versions under development to help disabled persons control their arms and legs, enabling them to perform basic life tasks.

Google Gives Georgia Tech $1 Million

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 05:55 AM PDT

Georgia Tech to pursue Transparent Internet with $1 million Google Focused Research Award to build a benchmark for the open internet. This is a project os two years which will  provide tools for users worldwide to monitor their Internet Service Providers performance………

What if Internet users could click a button and determine whether their service was being artificially slowed down? Or if the government were censoring their content? In the name of Internet transparency, a team of Georgia Tech researchers will use a $1 million Google Focused Research Award to provide Internet users around the world with just those kinds of tools. The two-year unrestricted award (with a third-year option for an additional $500,000) will fund a range of activities that together are intended to make Internet access more transparent for the billions of network subscribers around the globe. At the end of the project, the team hopes to provide a suite of web-based, Internet-scale measurement tools that any user around the world could access for free. With the help of these tools, users could determine whether their ISPs are providing the kind of service customers are paying for and whether the data they send and receive over their network connections is being tampered with by governments and/or ISPs.

“Community collaboration is a big part of this project,” said Wenke Lee, Professor in the School of Computer Science and a principal investigator on the grant. “Ultimately we hope this project will help create a ‘transparency ecosystem,’ where more and more users will take advantage of the measurement tools, which in turn will improve the accuracy and comprehensiveness of our analysis.”For example,” Lee continued, “say something happens again like what happened in Egypt recently, when the Internet was essentially shut down. If we have a community of Internet user-participants in that country, we will know instantly when a government or ISP starts to block traffic, tamper with search results, even alter web-based information in order to spread propaganda.”"Regardless of what policies an ISP or government takes on issues like censorship and net neutrality, we believe those policies should be transparent,” Feamster said. “In addition to new network measurement and security monitoring algorithms, we want to create and deploy a ‘transparency watchdog’ system that uses monitoring agents to keep constant tabs of network performance and availability in strategic Internet locations around the world.”

The project, funded under Google‘s 2-year-old Focused Research program will analyze Internet access along three main properties: reachability from a variety of access networks; performance of user networks, particularly in comparison to the performance promises made by Internet service providers (ISPs); and integrity of information moving through these networks.According to Feamster, some 60 nations (including the United States) censor some access to information on the Internet. Moreover, the total number of worldwide users (currently estimated at 1.9 billion) is expected to double within the next decade. Finally, at least 4.5 billion people subscribe to cellular networks, accessing through their mobile devices everything from online banking services to streaming music and video. Both “traditional” Internet connections and cellular-based networks will be covered by the tools the researchers hope to create.
