Cisco Cius Tablet Now Available For Pre-Order

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 03:42 AM PDT

You can now purchase the new Android tablet from Cisco. Dubbed as the Cisco Cius, it is an ultra-portable, mobile collaboration business tablet that offers access to essential business applications and technologies. The tablet will be an Android-powered device and will pretty much support all the usual nitty-gritty's that tablets these days seek to flaunt.

The Cisco Cius sports a 7-inch display, Android 2.2, and a five megapixel video-capable camera—and while the Cius isn't expected to be generally avail able until the end of May, the company has revealed some partners are setting hands on the units now.

Instead of enabling users to keep up with their social networking sites or play furious games of Angry Birds, the Cisco Cius aims to integrate with existing corporate and enterprise communications setups: that includes things like secured email and instant messaging between employees, but also tapping into telephone, voicemail, and video conferencing systems while complying with enterprise security and auditing requirements. When someone drags an iPhone or iPad into an organization, IT crews can go nuts to make sure call logs are properly kept, apps meet mobility policy and security requirements, and the organization can keep its hands on its intellectual property even if a tablet (or an employee) goes AWOL. The Cisco Cius is designed to work as just another endpoint on a managed corporate network, while giving employees connectivity and communications features they need.

Under the hood, the Cius is based on an 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor and runs Android 2.2. However, unlike typical Android devices, Cius users won't be able to run out to any old app store and load anything they like willy-nilly: Cius administrators will be able to control what apps people can load onto the devices. The Cius sports a 7-inch 1,024 by 600-pixel touchscreen display, 1 GB of RAM, 32 GB of flash storage, a front-facing camera capable of supporting 720p, 30fps video communication via Cisco Telepresence as well as a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera for video and still images. The Cius sports integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking. Cisco is also marketing a blocking station for the Cius tablet that makes the whole thing resemble a typical corporate telephone handset—except the base station also supports three USB 2.0 ports, DisplayPort for hooking up to bigger screens, gigabit Ethernet, and either a standard or slimline telephone handset for more-private conversation. Verizon Wireless has indicated it plans to offer LTE-enabled versions of the Cius to enterprise customers, as well.

Although the Cius probably won't be any competition for the Apple iPad when it finally reaches a broader market in May, the Cius may give the BlackBerry Playbook a run for its money: although RIM remains popular in enterprise circles, the company has yet to solidly position the Playbook as either a consumer electronics device or a friend to corporate IT managers. Cisco's Cius is coming down firmly on the corporate side of the fence.

A Bicycle Built For None

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 02:40 AM PDT

The 1949 movie Jour de Fete shows a postman frantically chasing his bicycle, which rides away on its own and now scientists and engineers have been trying to explain bicycle self-stability ever since the 19th century, a new analysis says the commonly accepted explanations are at least partly wrong.Bicycles are stable because of the gyroscopic effect of the spinning front wheel or because the front wheel trails behind the steering axis  or both………

In a discovery that could lead to better and safer bicycle design, researchers have shown that long-accepted gyro and caster effects are not needed to make a bike balance itself. In fact, it’s a mixture of complicated physical effects linked to the distribution of mass that makes it so a bicycle can remain up when moving. This finding was demonstrated on a riderless bike by researchers at Cornell University, the University of Wisconsin-Stout and Delft, The Netherlands. (Science, April 15, 2011.)“It’s all about how bicycle leaning automatically causes steering, which can bring the wheels back under a falling bike,” said Andy Ruina, professor of mechanics at Cornell and a co-author on the paper titled, “Bicycles can be self-stable without gyroscopic or caster effects.”The trail or caster effect is called that because the front wheel of a bike behaves like the front caster wheel of a grocery cart.To prove that gyro and caster effects were not needed, the researchers built a riderless bicycle with two small wheels, each matched with a counter-rotating disk to eliminate the gyro effects, and with the front wheel contact point slightly ahead of the steering axis, giving it a negative caster effect. When launched at more than about 5 mph, the research bike like many bicycles still balanced itself. If you knock it slightly to one side, it straightens itself back upright.“We have found that almost any self-stable bicycle can be made unstable by misadjusting either the trail, the front-wheel gyro or the front-assembly, center-of-mass position,” the researchers explained in their paper. “Conversely, many unstable bicycles can be made stable by appropriately adjusting any one of these three design variables.”While their work was intended to gain insight into the nature of bicycle balance, the researchers said, their analysis might lead to further improvements in bicycle design.“The evolutionary process that has led to common present bicycle designs might not yet have explored potentially useful regions in design space,” the report concludes.

Neonode Z Force Optical Touchscreen Coming in ASUS Tablets

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 12:53 AM PDT

Neonode zForce optical touchscreen is a new tablet that will soon be launched this year. zForce, Neonode's touch technology for mobile devices, is touted to be relatively more cost effective than current high performance solutions out in the market. It rubs along well with high resolution pen writing blended with finger navigation such as gestures, multi-touch, sweeps and more. It also happens to be operable with newer reflective display panels.

Neonode zForce there is no additional layer over the touch screen, as in the case of resistive and capacitive touch panels. The company uses optical technology to detect clicks and declares that the response from its solutions can be even better than the capacitive panels. The absence of additional layers in the display unit will make it thinner, plus the cost of production of new touch panels are lower than those of competitors.

Diagonal touchscreen Neonode zForce is in the range of 5 to 13 inches, and it supports Multi-Touch. Unfortunately, ASUS has not said when the market received the first devices with new displays and that they will represent. For end users this means that devices will become more subtle and, hopefully, more responsive to the touch. By year end, ASUS plans to ship a product line with an optical touch screen of Neonode.

Kogan Launches Agora 7-inch Android Tablet

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 12:37 AM PDT

An unknown electronics maker Kogan has launched a 7-inch Android tablet called the Agora in the UK running Android 2.2 OS. The device is powered by a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, 512MB RAM and comes with 4GB internal storage.

The Agora tablet has a capacitive touchscreen with 800×480 resolution. It is driven by a 1GHz Samsung ARM Cortex A8 processor and 512MB of RAM. It has only 4GB of internal storage, but at that price you should be able to fork out for a microSD card to supplement the available data storage.

The tablet is a respectable 390g and 12.4mm thick. There is no rear facing camera but the Agora does have a front facing 1.3MP camera and a microphone for video calling. A miniUSB port is present along with a miniHDMI port and a headphone socket.

The tablet runs Android 2.2 and comes with WiFi connectivity and a G sensor. Kogan says that the device supports HD 720p playback and the gadget also comes with an HDMI cable.

The specifications are comparable to those of the Archos 70 Internet Tablet which sells for more than double the price of the Agora. Kogan’s tablet is also cheaper than other budget tablets that we are seeing appear, like the ones from Elonex that we saw earlier this week at the Gadget Show Live.

It is priced at AUD$189.

Blackberry PlayBook Unboxing [Video]

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 12:17 AM PDT

IntoMobile has managed to show an unboxing video of BlackBerry PlayBook. This is the 16GB version, and aside from the markings on the box itself, it’s safe to assume all versions will sport the same package design. Inside the box is obviously the PlayBook itself tucked in a neoprene sleeve.

The Blackberry PlayBook reviews have hit the US tech blogs. It's clear that while RIM has relatively powerful hardware, a unique OS with a promising tablet ecosystem, it's just not worth buying at launch as it needs time to mature, especially given that pricing starts at $499 for what is basically a Wi-Fi only 7-inch tablet that does less than the competition. (goes on sale on April 19).

Perian 1.2.2 Is Now Available for Download

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 11:52 PM PDT

Perian, a free and open source QuickTime component that adds native support for many popular video formats, has been updated to version 1.2.2. It brings, for the first time ever, support for the Google-promoted WebM open video format and VP8 media container – outside the confines of the Chrome browser which supports these formats out-of-the-box.

Here's the original changelog (lacking bug fixes and other notes discussed further below):

· Added WebM/VP8 support
· Added support for compressed MKV tracks, as generated by newer versions of mkvtoolnix
· Added FFv1 lossless video support
· Added an internal decoder for Theora, fixing compatibility problems with XiphQT.

In addition to fixing various issues with formats already supported by Perian, the new release is notably the last one to support Macintosh computers based on the PowerPC CPU architecture.

For now, the minimum system requirements still call for Mac OS X 10.4.7 (Tiger) or higher.

As a PrefPane app, Perian can be easily installed by just downloading the disk image from the link below and double clicking its icon. From there on, just follow the on-screen instructions and Perian will be installed in seconds.

Perian is a 3.7 MB download and can be used by anyone completely free of charge.

Removing Perian from your system is even easier. Simply access it from System Preferences and select "Remove Perian" from the General tab.

PS3 To Bring Portal 2 Service

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 11:19 PM PDT

Portal 2 isn't just a sequel to a cult first-person puzzle game. It could also be a major step towards a world where the platform you use to play a game matters less than the game itself. The long-awaited Portal 2, which pits players in a physics-based game against (what is assumed to be) the cheerfully homicidal GLaDOS artificial intelligence, will be released on April 19.

The new title from Valve Software brings the firm's Steam service to the PlayStation 3 for the first time, albeit in a limited form. Using a Steam Overlay for the console, PS3 owners will be able to play cooperative multiplayer matches with PC and Mac gamers on the Steam service, as well as chat to them using voice and text.

Steam, however, evolved into an application management system, allowing background updates of games registered with the Steam service to be downloaded and updated. Other developers signed on, and Steam now is one of the leading means of electronic distribution of software on the PC. Steam also allows users to transfer content from PC to PC and even allows saved games to be stored in the cloud, as the Steam Cloud tied to Portal 2 does.

In February, Valve suggested that it was working on a “big picture” mode for Steam, which is designed at bringing the app to television. The service hit the Mac last year, and AMD has even used it to distribute drivers.

Although Sony and Valve described how Steam will work in a blog post, a FAQ on the SteamPowered site goes into much more detail.

To take advantage of the Steam features, users need to link their PlayStation Network (PSN) account to Steam, either by selecting a new Steam account or using an established one.

Users won’t need to do anything special to access Steam via the Portal 2 game for the PS3; instead, all a user needs to do is to press the “Select” button on the PS3 controller. The overlay will allow users to play cross-platform with their friends who have a copy of the game for the PC; plus redeem downloadable content registered to the PC or Mac, view achievements, news, and friend profiles.

To access Steam Cloud (the saved games) users will need to press the “TRIANGLE” button from the save/load screen, then select the number of saves to back up.

There’s also an additional bonus: bundled with the PS3 version of the game is a code to play Portal 2 on a PC. While that will allow users to play Portal 2 on their PC, the additional copy can’t be used to play in cooperative mode with the PS3 player, Valve said.

MuscleNerd Explains: Why The iPad 2 Jailbreak So Hard

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 11:00 PM PDT

Yesterday, Apple has released iOS 4.3.2 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPad 2, iPhone Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G and iOS 4.2.7 for CDMA Verizon iPhone 4. But still iPad 2 is out from this list. That means the iPad 2 still doesn’t have a jailbreak.

It seems that the iPhone Dev-Team and the Chronic Dev Team have been taking a look at it, both MuscleNerd and p0sixninja are working hard to find an exploit, but things have been tough.

Here’s what MuscleNerd tweeted:

So far, our tests have shown my theory might be right :( (Once the A5 bootrom is off, it stays off until power cycle)

and another from MuscleNerd:

the bootrom is actually inside the A5, so that would require some very advanced decapping and optics

While p0sixninja added:

Wow, I guess @MuscleNerd was right. BootROM just isn’t there… Guess I gotta go HAM on Apple now.

Bottom line is this is going to take quite a bit of reverse-engineering in order to get it to work. Apple is making it more and more difficult to jailbreak their devices. That said, if anyone reading has some knowledge that can help them out, it may be a good time to lend a hand.

On celebration of the release new version it is also decided to serve the title for only $0.99. The app has now become universal, so those who had previously purchased the iPad version will not have to buy it back again.

iOS 4.3.2 May Still Be Vulnerable To ion1c Untether Exploit

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 09:34 AM PDT

@Comex has recently tweeted that the new iOS 4.3.2 firmware released today may be still be vulnerable to i0n1c's untethered jailbreak exploit. It was earlier depicted that Apple might close the loophole in the exploit after the release of iOS 4.3.1 untethered JB.

From the tweet:

"@comex: By the way, iOS 4.3.2 is (as far as I can see) still vulnerable to @i0n1c's untether vulnerability."

@iH8sn0w also suggested that a very important component has been compiled on 3 April, 2011 in iOS 4.3.2 firmware which could still make it vulnerable.

On the other hand @MuscleNerd has confirmed that the current version of Redsn0w is capable of JailBreaking iOS 4.3.2 but it would be a tethered JailBreak. This doesn't indicate that the untethered ion1c exploit has been closed. However, there is no official word from the @MuscleNerd or DevTeam that the exploit still persists on the latest software update or not.

Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2 Coming Soon[Confirmed]

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 09:19 AM PDT

Stefan Esser a.k.a @i0n1c confirmed that iOS 4.3.2 is still vulnerable to untethered Jailbreak which means that we will soon have full untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.2 for all devices.

@i0n1c will start working on it after Sunday and we might be able to see Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2 soon.

@i0n1c tweets:

Apple has been nice. I just verified that the untether vulnerability is not fixed in iOS 4.3.2 – my Ipad 1 is running untethered jailbroken

Of course the public untether binaries will not work with iOS 4.3.2 – I have to generate new untether binaries with new dyld/kernel offsets

I won't be able to create all the untether binaries before sunday, because I will be on planes,

Once I0n1c has produced the untether binaries for iOS 4.3.2 its likely that new version of RedSn0w and PwnageTool will be released by the iPhone Dev-Team.
