iPhone 4 NCK Unlock For Basebands 02.10.01 & 03.10.01

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 05:20 AM PDT

Dev-Team has been working on with an iPhone 4 unlocking solution for basebands 02.10.01 & 03.10.01 by updating ultrasn0w for many months now. Though they have pointed out about finding a way for iPhone 3G/3GS unlock but yet no clue or Eta is available by the Dev Team for a solid NCK iPhone 4 unlock discovery.

For those who don't know, the NCK unlock is a new method discovered for unlocking iPhone 4 which is found to be only of 40 Bits (5 digits) which can theoretically be cracked with a brute force attack.

Meanwhile, @Veeence has made a small update to the FAQ regarding the NCK iPhone 4 unlock for 02.10.01 & 03.10.01 basebands.

Since there is a lot of confusion out there, and since I'm repeating myself all the time (which I do not really like), I made this little write up of questions that are continuously being asked (my personal FAQ). Please not that this is a global explanation. Don't try to argue with me on specific details.

1. What happend?! I thought the unlock for basebands 02.10.01 & 03.10.01 would be released within the next 2 weeks?

As you know the Dev-Team (MuscleNerd) have been working on the unlock for quite a while now. They were making great progress on the unlock, but they found out that they (accidentally) unlocked "one particular SIM card" instead of the baseband itself. Which means that the unlock would only be an unlock you could use with MuscleNerd's T-Mobile SIM. So, useless. If the unlock would unlock the baseband instead of "the SIM", it'd probably be out within 2 weeks (reasonable timeframe which they had hoped). But things turned out to be different. Basically these <2 weeks predictions were a lack of information.

2. What is this NCK-key cracking? How does it work?

The NCK-key is the key generated by Apple if you'd officially unlock you iPhone, and with officially I mean, via your carrier. This "NCK-unlock" method is known over a few years now, actually since geohot started working on unlocking the iPhone 2G. He developed a program that could "crack" this 15 digits long key and unique for every device. Geohots NCKBF program could do around 100,000 keys/second which would produce a hit in many years, or complete a search in 317 years. To get to a point where this is actually doable we would need many orders of magnitude of improvement. Even if you use a PS3 (would we still want to use this??) or special hardware (within 1,000 US$ range) you will only get an improvement of 20-100 times.. which doesn't help much.

Now, luckily, with the exploits they have now, they can't unlock your baseband, but they *can* capture more information from the baseband to speed up this cracking process. Since the NORID and CHIPID (unique for every device) are known, you'd apparently only have to check 40 more bits (5 digits). A 40 bits key is theoretically crackable on "home hardware" within a week (24/7). The downside of this approach is that you'll have to keep your computer turned on, and your iPhone has to be connected. And that is the reason why they never tried it before. Please note that this method is completely theoretical and has NOT been tried at all at this moment.

UPDATE

The status of your baseband (carrier locked or unlocked) is saved in the seczone, which is cryptographically tied to each unique device and never being updated with a baseband update. Since you only have a handful attempts to test your generated (possible) NCK key's against the crypto before the baseband permanent locks you out for a "NCK-unlock", you can't really verify all the generated NCK-key's realtime with the iPhone.

So the plan is to dump the seczone, get the unique NORID and CHIPID from the baseband using the baseband hacks/exploits and generate your unique NCK-key "offline" (meaning, your iPhone does not have to be connected to your computer while finding your unique NCK-key). Please note that this is still completely theoretical, since this has never been tried at all. It's trial and error, don't be disappointed if it fails.

UPDATE II

It looks like the iPhone Dev-Team successfully dumped the seczone to do the brute force NCK cracking offline. It also looks like they were able to capture the official NCK key from their carrier which they needed to "decode" the encryption algorithms that are used to generate the NCK key. That way, in combination with the NORID and CHIPID (and likely some additional information from the baseband), they will be able to generate the the NCK for every unique device out there.

deviceKey = SHA1_hash(norID+chipID)

nckKey = custom_hash(norID, chipID, SHA1_hash(NCK), deviceKey)

(the nckKey is the key that eventually gives the seczone (and so the baseband) the unlocked state).

Right now they are brute force cracking the encryption, which is going to take a few days (if not weeks). If they succeed, progress may be made fast. In the meanwhile they are working on a software unlock. Please note that both are not said to success.

3. Now what? Should I sell my locked iPhone 4?

I'd wait for more information on this "NCK-unlock". Right now it's pretty vague what timeframe we're talking about. If the Dev-Team can pull this method off, it'd be very promising for those waiting for an unlock. If this method turns out to be not doable, I'd consider selling your iPhone 4 and save up for a factory unlocked iPhone 5.

4. Do you think there is ever going to be an unlock?

Of course. But that's unlikely to be any time soon (with soon being <1 month).

5. If the NCK method fails, how long do you think it will take for the Dev-Team to unlock the iPhone 4 softwarematically?

No ETA at all. Could be a few weeks, but it could easily be a few months as well.

Hope this helps.

Apple Removes Liquid Contact Indicators From iPad 2

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 04:49 AM PDT

According to 9to5Mac report, Apple is no longer using Liquid Contact Indicators in its latest iPad. This makes sense because these sensors have not been all that reliable and subject to a lot of false positives from something as mundane as sweat.

It's mostly unknown why Apple removed the LCIs from the iPad 2, but it could be that LCIs are not very reliable in telling of water damage especially in humid or winter environments.

For reference, brief warranty details from the Apple Genius Database are listed below:

iPad 1:

Liquid Contact Indicators

The iPad warranty excludes coverage for damage caused by liquid. To help determine if an iPad has been in contact with liquid, two liquid contact indicators (LCIs) are installed on the iPad at the following locations: • At the bottom of the headphone jack• In the 30-pin connector port (requires holding the product at a 45 degree angle to view)Use a lighted otoscope to look into the headphone jack and 30-pin connector slot for activated LCIs. They turn red on contact with liquid.

iPad 2

check sim card tray for corrosion

So, for those that use your iPads in the washroom, you can now rest assured with this change to LCIs in to iPad 2.

Rumor: iOS 5 Release Date Set for Fall 2011

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 04:09 AM PDT

Beside yesterday’s rumor here is another rumor about iOS 5. Once again it’s from TechCrunch. They have reported that iOS 5 will be released in fall 2011, not summer. The extra time will be needed to polish a significant slate of new features that will make iOS 5 a must-have mobile operating system. Coming with iOS 5, say the sources, will be cloud-based features for online storage of music, photos and video.

Here's what we're hearing right now:

* iOS 5 will launch in the fall and will be a major revamp of the OS.
* It could well be previewed at WWDC, it just won't be released then.
* The iOS 5 launch is also likely to coincide with the release of a new type of iPad, which we previously reported on.
* The new iOS will be heavily built around the cloud, and we could see several new services launch from Apple that take advantage of this.
* Yes, one of those is very likely a "music locker" service. There is also a fall launch aim for this, during Apple's annual music-themed event.
* But much of the cloud stuff will first be talked about at WWDC, Apple's developer event which will take place in June.
* One of the new cloud service elements is likely a location service that focuses on finding friends and family members.
* As we said yesterday, OS X Lion is still on pace for a summer release — some of the new cloud components are likely to be baked into it as well.

Tech Crunch report also raises the prospect of iOS 5 possibly arriving in conjunction with the iPad 3, although no concrete evidence that we’ve seen suggests that Apple would actually roll out another new tablet this year. With Apple’s promotional machine continuing to push the iPad 2 as the tablet everyone will be talking about throughout 2011, it seems a logical bet that the iPad 3 will be reserved for next year, when it can effectively be pushed as 2012′s most talked about tablet.

Also detailed in their report is the tablet will feature an SoC designed around an ARM Cortex A9 processor. Other misc. features include a possible front-facing camera, HDMI output, HDTV port, a microSD card slot, and headphone out/mic in port.Other details for price and availability are expected to come later this year. The tablet's pearl white shell, use of buttons and what looks like a built-in kick-stand brings back what we miss from the tablets of the past and what is not found in your common bare-surface iPad-like tablets of today. With extra little fun additions like the flip cover over the ports and the tiny lip curl on the edges of the tablet, it's the small pointless yet pleasant things like these that gives a tablet character.

Google NEXUS Android 3.0 Tablet Coming

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 03:16 AM PDT

Google NEXUS tablet with android 3.0 to be made by LG and android 2.0 tablets won’t upgrade to android 3.0.Google will finally tweak  it's Android up to par to be able  compete with iOS and working on it's own branded tablet, which is scheduled for release sometime in mid-summer or early fall………

LG Electronics made a new agreement with Google to produce the first Nexus Tablet that will run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb for release mid-Summer or early Fall, according to new discoveries posted by editors over at mobile-review.com.LG is the only manufacturer to agree to Google terms for making their branded products. The agreement we can assume includes conditions like no customizations outside of those sanctioned by Google to Android 3.0 and the tablets have to get the most current updates released by Google, according to source.Google Nexus Tablet will be an official showcase for Android 3.0 in much the same was as the Google Nexus One and Nexus S have been for the smartphone Android OS. This time, however, it'll be LG that sees the benefits of working with the big G rather than HTC or Samsung.

Now the tablet hasn't been confirmed by LG or Google but this wouldn't be the first time Google has contracted a top device maker to create a Google branded device, the Nexus One and Nexus S Smartphone's have all been offered in recent years. In both those handsets case they came with zero manufacturer customizations and they each get the most current Android updates whenever they are released by Google.LG already has an Android 3.0 tablet in the works the Optimus Pad, but this would be a reference device that would receive OS updates first, much like the aforementioned Android smartphones. Apparently only LG would agree to Google's terms. If this device does launch or at least get announced this Summer it would be interesting to see if LG keeps 3D alive in the Google branded device. Also it would be interesting to see what kind of special Google touches the device could get. It's worth noting that Google has been rumored to be working on their own self-branded tablet since last year.

Windows Phone 7 – The First Major Update Is Here

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 03:13 AM PDT

The first major update for Windows Phone 7 is starting to appear on user's devices. The process started a couple of days ago and the first step is smartphones, this was Microsoft's claim. In reality, the update varies from provider to provider. The update is said to contain some new features, as well as improved stability to the Windows Mobile platform.

Windows Phone 7

What's new in the NoDo update from Microsoft:

  • Copy&Paste: maybe the most important change Microsoft made to the platform (and it's about time if you ask me, Nokia made it possible from version 7.0). This will make browsing the internet much faster.
  • Faster starting time for apps: the time it takes to enter and exit a app is much shorter, also the restart time for apps has reduced noticeable. This is step forward for multitasking, which will come in the near future.
  • Wi-Fi: Now it's possible to see the MAC address of your device. We hope the next update will lat you set a manual IP address.
  • Outlook: A much needed update, see attachments from non-exchange email accounts(Yahoo!, Google, Hotmail)
  • Facebook/Camera/Audio: tweaks for synchronizing your Facebook account and photo/video camera use.

The next major update is scheduled at the end of this year, cod-name Mango and it will bring other essential elements such as: multitasking, Twitter synchronization and Internet Explorer 9. Mango will certainly mark the transition to Windows Phone 7.5.

We Now Have Smartphones For Airplanes

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 03:10 AM PDT

In theory, laptops and other devices must stay turned off during the lift off and landing, but cell phones have to be turned off during the entire flight. The reason? They interfere with the flight equipment, but because of the altitude, they wouldn't work anyway. The cell phones work on a different wavelength.

We Now Have Smartphones For Airplanes

We all know the old problem while flying, no cell phones allowed. At lift off, any airline company let's you know in all international languages, that you must turn off all electronics, including cell phones for the duration of the flight.

But now, the situation doesn't look as grim, actually, the solution to our problems is here, in the form of Aircell. It's the biggest company in the world who gives access to mobile networks from aircraft, and even internet access.  Until now, their phones only allowed to call or to be called, but now, faced with bigger and bigger demand for internet access, they released a model that  grants you instant internet access during flight.

The phone is based on a Android OS, it has a 3.8 inch (9.65 cm) capacitive screen and the usual connectivity of any smartphone on the market. The design of the phone is simple, classic alpha-numeric touch-sensitive keyboard and the usual android keys (back, home and menu), a big display (compared to other classic phones) and the glossy finish to the case, gives it a stylish look, suitable to a business class phone.  Of course, we are talking about a business class operator, given the costs at which a network for aircraft operates.

All internet users who are looking for highly developed, fast and accurate browsers have a reason to celebrate now! Mozilla offers now its latest developed browser, the Firefox 4, which brings together the most improved features that make browsing a much better experience.

When it comes down to browsing options, Mozilla Firefox is one of the best developers in this market segment. This thing is primarily because this company presents an extreme interest to make its users happy. The new Firefox browser provides easy and fast operations, high performance, powerful personalization, advanced security settings and universal access. All these feature categories are provided through different tools that ensure a much easier and efficient browsing.

A great thing about Firefox 4 is the fact that it allows multiple website browsing without negating the speed. It also presents a series of features that ensure different options, such as switch-to-tab, app tabs, panorama tabs organizing, smooth scrolling, closed tabs reopening and many more.

The developer has divided this new experience into two different options, the Firefox 4 RC (Release Candidate – for Maemo and Android platforms) and Beta option. While the first one is in use, the second one presents an underdevelopment stage. The Firefox 4 was officially launched onto the market a few days back and already registered a high market quotation.

The new browser is a fierce competitor to the new Microsoft and Google products, Internet Explorer 9 and Chrome. Even more, as Mozilla is a nonprofit organization, it offers the new browser free for computers that run under Mac OS X, Linux or Windows operating systems. It also provides 80 languages from which users can choose the most convenient one.

For the moment, Firefox 4 is quoted as being six times faster when compared to the predecessor platform. It also provides the "do not track" option that allows users to have their online activities recorded, thing that is very useful for targeted online services or ads. This open-source browsing software is also designed to support rich game or video graphics that are based on HTML5 function, thing that guarantees the most advanced visual experiences.

Through Firefox 4, the developer provides users the leeway to control their web experience by adjusting the system in a way which gives them comfort and satisfactory results. For this, the system comes in a set of incredible new features that mention high speed, support for the latest web technologies and streamlined user interface.

For the moment, the top of web browsing developers shows Microsoft's Internet Explorer on the first position, being closely followed by Mozilla's Firefox, Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari.

Use Gevey SIM To Unlock iPhone 4 iOS 4.3.1, 4.3, 4.2.1, 4.1 Without Jailbreaking

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 10:13 AM PDT

As it is known to all, GEVEY SIM card unlocks iPhone 4 basebands 1.59.00 / 03:10.01 / 02.10.04 / 04.10.01 running iOS 4, iOS 4.1, 4.2, 4.2.1 and iOS 4.3 without requiring you to jailbreak your device. Applenberry has posted an official video on how to use GEVEY SIM.

For those who don't know, basically, Turbo SIM spoofs the IMSI number and authentication key (Ki) supplied by the SIM card to the network, allowing locked phones to be used on any mobile network with which they are technically compatible. It copies the information from your AT&T SIM card and then the SIM to carrier of your choice. This allows the Turbo SIM to append on your carrier SIM, and apparently gives you full calling, SMS capabilities.

Many people find a little complicated to use it. Applenberry has posted a video showing HOW TO USE GEVEY SIM in order to unlock iPhone 4 device. Check our the video:

Gevey SIM Is Illegal[MuscleNerd Warned]

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 10:01 AM PDT

iPhone unlockers and buyers beware about the newly released Gevey SIM unlock for iPhone 4 for up to iOS 4.3.1 and basebands 2.10.04, 3.10.01 and 4.10.01. The iPhone dev team member MucleNerd, has announced on his twitter account some bad news about Gevey SIM. MuscleNerd said that Gevey SIM is illegal in USA and probably other countires as it dials 112 (emergency) then hang up.

One of the steps in unlocking your iPhone includes dialing 112 and hanging up within 2 seconds. 112 is an emergency number in US and this may change depending on your country. In US, when you dial an emergency number, it may get routed to 911.

So if you are hanging up on a Government Protection agency even before they can take your call. This action is very much ILLEGAL in US. If you are lucky you can get away with it. Otherwise you may be in trouble with the Police.

This is what he has announced on his Twitter account:

From his tweet:

That “dial 112 then hang up” in gevey http://is.gd/FGNeJi is illegal in USA, and probably other countries. Buyer beware.

Unfortunately, MucleNerd confirmed that there is no way to make Gevey SIM method legal.

Charlie Miller – iOS 4.3.1 Does Not Fix Pwn2Own iPhone Exploit

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 09:47 AM PDT

Charlie Miller, who won Pwn2Own 2011 contest by exploiting iPhone 4 security, confirmed through a recent tweet that the iOS 4.3.1 update released yesterday does not fix the Pwn2Own exploit.

Here’s what he has tweeted.

From the tweet:

iOS 4.3.1 does not fix the pwn2own bug. It's weird they fixed it in the next os x update after the contest, but not the next iPhone update.

More time for the bad guys to get their bindiff->iPhone exploit workflow going.

The attack simply required that the target iPhone surfs to a rigged web site. On first attempt at the drive-by exploit, the iPhone browser crashed but once it was relaunched, Miller was able to hijack the entire address book.

It's unclear why Apple didn't fix the widely publicized exploit.

Self-Strengthening Nanocomposite

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 09:18 AM PDT

Rice University Mechanical Engineers have developed a polymer based material that becomes stiffer when subjected to repeated stresses and it works much like muscles and bones that strengthen after working out……….

Researchers at Rice University have created a synthetic material that gets stronger from repeated stress much like the body strengthens bones and muscles after repeated workouts.Work by the Rice lab of Pulickel Ajayan, professor in mechanical engineering and materials science and of chemistry, shows the potential of stiffening polymer-based nanocomposites with carbon nanotube fillers. The team reported its discovery this month in the journal ACS Nano. The trick, it seems, lies in the complex, dynamic interface between nanostructures and polymers in carefully engineered nanocomposite materials.Brent Carey, a graduate student in Ajayan’s lab, found the interesting property while testing the high-cycle fatigue properties of a composite he made by infiltrating a forest of vertically aligned, multiwalled nanotubes with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), an inert, rubbery polymer. To his great surprise, repeatedly loading the material didn’t seem to damage it at all. In fact, the stress made it stiffer.

Carey, whose research is sponsored by a NASA fellowship, used dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) to test their material. He found that after an astounding 3.5 million compressions (five per second) over about a week’s time, the stiffness of the composite had increased by 12 percent and showed the potential for even further improvement.“It took a bit of tweaking to get the instrument to do this,” Carey said. “DMA generally assumes that your material isn’t changing in any permanent way. In the early tests, the software kept telling me, ‘I’ve damaged the sample!’ as the stiffness increased. I also had to trick it with an unsolvable program loop to achieve the high number of cycles.”Materials scientists know that metals can strain-harden during repeated deformation, a result of the creation and jamming of defects  known as dislocations  in their crystalline lattice. Polymers are made of long, repeating chains of atoms, don’t behave the same way.The team is not sure precisely why their synthetic material behaves as it does. “We were able to rule out further cross-linking in the polymer as an explanation,” Carey said. “The data shows that there’s very little chemical interaction, if any, between the polymer and the nanotubes, and it seems that this fluid interface is evolving during stressing.”

“The use of nanomaterials as a filler increases this interfacial area tremendously for the same amount of filler material added,” Ajayan said. “Hence, the resulting interfacial effects are amplified as compared with conventional composites.”For engineered materials, people would love to have a composite like this,” he said. “This work shows how nanomaterials in composites can be creatively used.”They also found one other truth about this unique phenomenon: Simply compressing the material didn’t change its properties; only dynamic stress deforming it again and again made it stiffer.Carey drew an analogy between their material and bones. “As long as you’re regularly stressing a bone in the body, it will remain strong,” he said. “For example, the bones in the racket arm of a tennis player are denser. Essentially, this is an adaptive effect our body uses to withstand the loads applied to it.Our material is similar in the sense that a static load on our composite doesn’t cause a change. You have to dynamically stress it in order to improve it.”

Cartilage may be a better comparison and possibly even a future candidate for nanocomposite replacement. “We can envision this response being attractive for developing artificial cartilage that can respond to the forces being applied to it but remains pliable in areas that are not being stressed,” Carey said. Both researchers noted this is the kind of basic research that asks more questions than it answers. While they can easily measure the material’s bulk properties, it’s an entirely different story to understand how the polymer and nanotubes interact at the nanoscale.“People have been trying to address the question of how the polymer layer around a nanoparticle behaves,” Ajayan said. “It’s a very complicated problem. But fundamentally, it’s important if you’re an engineer of nanocomposites. From that perspective, I think this is a beautiful result. It tells us that it’s feasible to engineer interfaces that make the material do unconventional things.”
