Report: Apple Plans Improved Voice Commands in iOS 5

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 10:31 PM PDT

TechCrunch have reported that Apple plans to feature deep integration of voice control in the next version of its mobile operating system. Using voice controls, iOS users will be able to navigate the operating system’s interface using artificial intelligence and assistive technologies.

Last year, through the acquisition of Siri, Apple gained access to groundbreaking technologies so intelligent that, if implemented via iDevices, could make our favorite Apple products like the iPhone vastly “smarter” than any previous model. Siri, after all, has pioneered applications that enable users to deliver voice commands that prompt the app to do the research or other legwork required to complete a particular task.

The rumors come amid increased speculation that Apple plans to delay its next iPhone until the fall. Unlike previous years, Apple is not expected to announce its next phone at its World Wide Developers Conference, taking place in June. The company is, however, expected to give developers their first glimpse of the expanded voice technology.

While many are already speculating the iPhone 5 will debut at the same time as iOS 5 in fall, at this time there is really no concrete evidence to otherwise suggest that Apple will stray from tradition and not release the 5th generation iPhone in June at WWDC.

Apple May Bring 4G / LTE Network By The End Of The Year

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 10:04 PM PDT

After the disappointing news of delayed iPhone 5 we have something good news to share. The more interesting rumor from yesterday, though, was that Apple would refrain from unveiling the iPhone 5 at this year's WWDC, instead focusing entirely on software. Many reports however, are now suggesting otherwise, but TechCrunch has released a detailed report explaining what they believe to coming in iOS 5, and then continues to mention why we may not see an iPhone 5 at WWDC, and their answer is simple: LTE.

The contributor Steve Cheney of TechCrunch believes that iPhone 5 fall launch can make LTE quite possible. He speculates that if iPhone 5 is launched this summer the chances of LTE is zero to ten percent, if it comes in fall, chances are 50 percent and if iPhone 5 comes in January than 100 percent it will have LTE support.

A fall timeframe would give Apple a more vetted and lower power Qualcomm chip for LTE, Cheney says. When the Verizon iPhone was unveiled in January, Apple COO Tim Cook addressed the LTE issue directly. "The first generation LTE chipsets force some design compromises. Some of which we would not make," he said. If Cheney is right, that may not be such an issue later this year.

LTE (short for Long Term Evolution) is the technology behind both AT&T's and Verizon's 4G network. Verizon is slightly ahead of their nemesis in their rollout schedule, but both companies should have much of the United States blanketed in 4G LTE by the end of 2013. Verizon in fact, just released their first Android device that is capable of running on the new 4G network, and reviews have widely praised the incredible speed (particularly compared to other technologies that are being touted as '4G,' such as Sprint's WiMax and T-Mobile's HSPDA) that rivals home broadband. It may make sense for Apple to continue its work on 4G LTE over the summer, and then release one single device that was capable of running old protocols (GSM and CDMA) as well as LTE. In fact, Apple's current Qualcomm chip in the Verizon iPhone 4 is already capable of both GSM and CDMA. Apple just needs to redesign their antenna to accommodate it.

Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 4.3.1 In Beta Testing, Coming Soon

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 09:29 PM PDT

Stefan Esser, iPhone hacking expert has already published a YouTube video, which shows an untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak running on his iPod Touch 4G. And now iPhone Dev Team is testing the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3 / 4.3.1. Once they finish their beta testing, they will release it. Though the exploit was developed and showcased by Stefan to untethered jailbreak iOS 4.3 but he handed it over to iPhone Dev Team's Musclenerd.

Here’s what he has tweeted.

From his tweet:

The iphone-dev-team is already beta-testing the untether. So it is up to them to give you your tool of choice.

Please don't bother the dev-team now. The deal is: if the beta test is successfull, they are free to do whatever they want with it.

The exploit is now under beta testing by Dev Team and it is pretty much expected that they will release Redsn0w updated version to untether idevices on iOS 4.3.x. The exploit does not support iPad 2 jailbreak.

Stefan Esser has provided more details about his untethered jailbreak solution:

Meanwhile everyone should have noticed that my prediction became true and Apple released iOS 4.3.1 in order to fix the PWN2OWN vulnerability in Safari.

It was very unlikely that Apple also fixed the kernel vulnerability I used for my untether exploit. Mainly because the kernelcache binary is about 8-10 MB in size and the likelihood that Apple finds the same vulnerability in that short amount of time was very low.

However you never know until you try it. So this morning when I woke up and saw that Sn0wbreeze 2.4 beta was released I thought it would be fun to create a new video.

Unfortunately Sn0wbreeze does not work with my iPad 1 and so I had to test with my iPod 4G.

So I just used Sn0wbreeze to do a tethered jailbreak of my iPod 4G and then I manually installed the untether exploit with SSH.

In the video you can see how I switch off the iPod, then restart it, show the version, show that it is untethered and has the multitasking gestures, i show that you can buy ringtones and then I show cydia and the ninja jump game from last time.

Because several people misunderstood me in the past:

a. I repeatedly stated that I will not release a jailbreak tool – I will only give out the untether. I did not try yet, but if it is feasible the untether could be a cydia package.

b. While the vulnerability I use is in the iPad 2 kernel my untether will NOT SUPPORT the iPad 2, because there is no way to install it there (bootrom exploits fixed). – however Comex is working on that part.

c. I am not giving out any ETA again, because the Jailbreak community is simply nuts. Last time I gave an ETA and even before that had passed I got constantly insulted by people that were demanding an immediate release. Sorry guys the more you insult people with the knowledge to actually do what YOU WANT the less motivation there is to use our free time to give it to you.

d. The only reason why I did not finish the untether before the ETA was due to unexpected work overload in my real job. It had nothing todo with the untether being too hard or unreal.

e. I don’t know why the dev team has not released a redsn0w that does tethered jailbreak for 4.3.1 – I would prefer that to be available, cause sn0wbreeze obviously does not work 100% yet.

f. If you want to learn more about iPhone kernel hacking/exploitation you should come to SyScan Singapore at the end of April.http://syscan.org/index.php/sg/program

MIX HTPC Mini Wireless Keyboard Mouse

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 10:17 AM PDT

The MIX Gestures Wireless Mini Keyboard Mouse is a 56 keys 2.4 GHz. RF Wireless keyboard with a built-in optical touch pad. Its portable and tiny design can be used for travel, school, or any other working environment. It is especially suitable for HTPC.

Much like many HTPC mini keyboards, this device is a palm sized 2.4GHz RF wireless keyboard which only requires batteries and a free USB port to work. However, instead of opting for the more typical (and traditional) trackball the MIX HTPC Mini Wireless Keyboard Mouse has instead gone for an optical touchpad to allow you to interact more fully with your operating system wirelessly (it has a 7 – 10 meter range which should be perfect for most living rooms).

The key to the potential success of this device is the fact that it not only crams all these features into one device, but that it does so while offering a footprint which is down right minuscule weighing it at 109 x 59 x 18mm and only 93 grams! This means you literally can hold this keyboard in your two hands much like you would an Apple iPod touch 4. This allows for not only a very intuitive feel, but also a very easy to use interface. When you are done with its small size should make finding a safe place for it in a coffee table drawer also very easy.

Measuring 109mm x 59mm x 18mm and weighing at 93 grams, the MIX Wireless Mini HTPC keyboard mouse retails for $50.

Apple MobileME To Get Alternate Payment Methods

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 10:10 AM PDT

According to a Germany-based website MacNews, Apple's most popular suit of web services MobileMe would face a major revamp in near future to introduce Apple's new plans for alternate payment methods.

Rumors have swirled for months that the service is due to undergo a major revamp, spurred by an e-mail from Apple CEO Steve Jobs to a customer promising the service "will get better in 2011."

The rumors have taken various forms, from making at least some version of the service available for free to adding a cloud-based "media locker" for a small fee — or changing, dropping or revamping existing services (which include website hosting, photo and video galleries, ad-free IMAP e-mail, account syncing, limited backup, equipment tracking, personal storage space and other features).

Apple has made its MobileME an online trail & free service which requires a credit card only for purchasing or renewal of the subscription. It means that the revamped and improved MobileMe is near to be revealed soon even in the next month.

The news enlightening addition of alternate payment methods in an advanced and well groomed MobileME also hints out towards another direction, Apple is certainly planning for switching of some free features of the MobileMe to paid ones.

After patching untethered jailbreak exploit in iOS 4.3.1 Firmware update by Apple, iPhone hacker Comex has tweeted about Apple's latest strategy in the cat-and-mouse jailbreak game. In his tweet he says Apple might have a spy within the iPhone Dev Team itself, allowing Cupertino to close exploits in their iOS software before the Dev Team can release a working jailbreak with them.

Here’s the original tweet:

The theory of Comex is based on an assumption which is quite clear and straight forward i.e Whenever the Dev Team is ready to release a possible exploit for the jailbreak, almost at once Apple releases a new firmware that makes it useless. Despite of all the secret efforts and confidential effors of Comex , MuscleNerd and i0n1c, the Cupertino company has always been able to patch the exploit with some iOS upgrade which is quite disappointing for the Dev Team.

According to Comex, he was keeping just such an exploit in reserve, one that had been present from iOS 4.0.2 all the way through iOS 4.3. When iOS 4.3.1 dropped, though, the exploit had been miraculously closed by Apple… just as Comex was preparing to deploy it.

"I try not to be paranoid, but it is really hard to explain this as anything but a leak," Comex said on his Twitter account.
