Intel Third-Generation SSD 320 Series

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 03:09 AM PDT

Intel announces third-generation SSD and the new 320 Series is the first of the company’s drives to use 25nm MLC NAND chips which also enabled capacities up to 600GB.Intel SSD 320 Series drives is positioned as a mainstream desktop and notebook SSD and because it uses the same controller chip as the old X25-M………

Intel Corporation announced its highly anticipated third-generation solid-state drive (SSD) the Intel Solid-State Drive 320 Series (Intel SSD 320 Series). Based on its industry-leading 25-nanometer (nm) NAND flash memory, the Intel SSD 320 replaces and builds on its high-performing Intel X25-M SATA SSD. Delivering more performance and uniquely architected reliability features, the new Intel SSD 320 offers new higher capacity models, while taking advantage of cost benefits from its 25nm process with an up to 30 percent price reduction over its current generation.“Intel designed new quality and reliability features into our SSDs to take advantage of the latest 25nm silicon, so we could deliver cost advantages to our customers,” said Pete Hazen, director of marketing for the Intel Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) Solutions Group. “Intel’s third generation of SSDs adds enhanced data security features, power-loss management and innovative data redundancy features to once again advance SSD technology. Whether it’s a consumer or corporate IT looking to upgrade from a hard disk drive, or an enterprise seeking to deploy SSDs in their data centers, the new Intel SSD 320 Series will continue to build on our reputation of high quality and dependability over the life of the SSD.”

The Intel SSD 320 is the next generation of Intel’s client product line for use on desktop and notebook PCs. It is targeted for mainstream consumers, corporate IT or PC enthusiasts who would like a substantial performance boost over conventional mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs). An SSD is more rugged, uses less power and reduces the HDD bottleneck to speed PC processes such as boot up and the opening of files and favorite applications. In fact, an upgrade from an HDD to an Intel SSD can give users one of the single-best performance boosts, providing an up to 66 percent gain in overall system responsiveness. The Intel SSD 320 Series comes in 40 gigabyte (GB), 80GB, 120GB, 160GB and new higher capacity 300GB and 600GB versions. It uses the 3 gigabit-per-second (3gbps) SATA II interface to support an SSD upgrade for the more than  billion SATA II PCs installed throughout the world. Continuing to offer high-performing random read and write speeds, which most affect a user’s daily computing experience, the Intel SSD 320 produces up to 39,500 input/output operations per second (IOPS) random reads and 23,000 IOPS random writes on its highest-capacity drives. In addition, the company has more than doubled sequential write speeds from its second generation to 220 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) sequential writes and still maintains one of the highest read throughputs at up to 270 MB/s sequential reads. This greatly improves a user’s multitasking capabilities. For example, a user can easily play background music or download a video, while working on a document with no perceivable slow down.

Already one of the most solid-performing SSDs over time, Intel continues to raise the bar on SSD reliability in the way it has architected its third generation, using proprietary firmware and controller, to further demonstrate that not all solid-state drives are created equal. In this rendition, Intel creatively uses spare area to deploy added redundancies that will help keep user data protected, even in the event of a power loss. It also includes 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard capabilities on every drive, to help protect personal data in the event of theft or loss.“Solid-state drives continue to be one of the hottest trends in computing,” said Bernard Luthi, vice president of marketing, Web management and customer service at leading e-retailer Newegg.com. “Intel remains a top brand because of its consistent performance and extremely low return rate. We are sure customers will welcome the new higher capacity drives, and now is a great time for consumers to upgrade their PC to a fast new SSD.”Intel SSD 320 prices, based on 1,000-unit quantities, are as follows: 40GB at $89; 80GB at $159; 120GB at $209; 160GB at $289; 300GB at $529 and 600GB at $1,069. Check retailers/e-tailers for consumer pricing. All models include a limited 3-year warranty from Intel.

“With recent announcements, we have expanded our SSD product line and now offer both consumers and computer OEMs more SSD choices,” said Tom Rampone, vice president and general manager, Intel NVM Solutions Group. “We see the Intel SSD 320 as a solid advancement to our SSD roadmap, and will continue to upgrade and refresh our SSD product line as we add more enterprise options for our business customers throughout the year.”Another benefit for Intel SSD purchasers is the Intel SSD Toolbox with Intel SSD Optimizer, a free utility which provides Microsoft Windows users with a powerful set of management, information and diagnostic tools to help maintain the health and out-of-box performance of the drive. To help ease the installation process, all Intel SSD users can download the free Intel Data Migration Software to help clone the entire content of a previous storage drive (SSD or HDD) to any Intel SSD.Intel SSDs can be purchased in the United States from such retailers as Best Buy or Fry’s Electronics, plus a variety of resellers, retailers or Internet e-tailers such as Newegg.com or Amazon.com worldwide.

Urban Photonic Sandtable Display

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 02:47 AM PDT

DARPA’s Urban Photonic Sandtable Display enables 3D battlefield planning without goofy glasses and that can be scaled up to six feet diagonally and allows visual depth of up to 12-inches.The technology comes courtesy of Zebra Imaging which earlier wowed us with some insane 3D printouts and the data will come from LIDAR systems like this ROAMS………..

Many of today’s conflicts occur in urban settings, making the ability to visualize conditions in urban areas increasingly important to commanders and mission planners. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently completed a five-year program called Urban Photonic Sandtable Display (UPSD) that creates a real-time, color, 360-degree 3D holographic display to assist battle planners. Without having to wear 3D goggles or glasses, a team of planners can view a large-format, interactive 3D display. Until now, two-dimensional, high-resolution flat panel color displays and 3D static monochrome images have been the most advanced visual planning tools available.UPSD assists team-based mission planning, visualization and interpretation of complex 3D data such as intelligence and medical imagery. It permits simultaneous viewing for up to 20 participants and is interactive, allowing the image to be frozen, rotated and zoomed up to the resolution limit of the data. The holographic display enables full visual depth capability up to 12 inches. The technology also enables realistic two-dimensional printouts of the 3D imagery that front line troops can take with them on missions.

UPSD is based on full-parallax technology, which enables each 3D holographic object to project the correct amount of light that the original object possessed in each direction, for full 360- degree viewing. Current 3D displays lack full-parallax and only provide 3D viewing from certain angles with typically only three to four inches of visual depth. Presently UPSD is a scalable display platform that can be expanded from a six-inch diagonal size up to a six-foot diagonal, in both monochrome and color formats. DARPA is initially transitioning the UPSD technology to an Air Force research center and two Army research centers to apply the technology to critical applications where the 3D holographic display will provide a unique benefit.Zebra Imaging of Austin, Texas was awarded the initial contract in 2005 and has researched and developed the technology.

Hanwha japan releases a new USB and HDMI connector for iPad, iPhone 4 and fourth-gen iPod touch. This device  will also charge the iPhone while you stream to your TV and has a USB port. The original adapter’s dock connector port is a USB 2.0 socket which is compatible with cameras supporting mass storage connection alongside the 720p-friendly HDMI port……..

Japanese don't quite stop making innovative products, even with natural and man-made disasters have struck.Hanwha has the UMA iOS HDMI adapter is an alternative to Apple‘s digital AV adapter presented with. As with the original quality is also the HD output to 720p and 1080p possible. Unlike Apple’s adapter has the UMA solution but no dock connector port.Hanwha's UMA-iOSHDMI (quite a mouthful) is a USB and HDMI converter that plugs into the iPad, iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4th generation port. When connected, the adaptor lets users output in up to 1024×768 resolution to any HDMI-enabled television. The switch is used to switch between HDMI and USB, as can the digital camera and iTunes synchronization is not output to HDMI can be conducted in parallel. The smaller mini-USB allows finally the power to the battery in either mode of the adapter. The price for the adapter that is currently available in Japan only, is at 5980 yen, or around 52 euro. It is significantly more expensive than the original, but also provides a combination of HDMI and Camera Adapter. It will be interesting to learn whether the HDMI & USB converter will let users plug in USB devices like flash drives or 3G modems. These will certainly extend the usefulness of your iPad or iPhone. No word if and when the adaptor will be sold in US and other international markets.

Linkedin Goes 100 Million Mark

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 01:12 AM PDT

The social networking LINKEDIN has recently went beyond the amazing 100 million member mark. This is especially good news for advertisers that leverage LinkedIn as a part of their B2B online marketing initiatives, as it means they will be able to reach a larger audience of prospects more effectively.

From linkedin blog:

LinkedIn reached a major milestone: 100 million professionals worldwide.

We're now growing at roughly one million new LinkedIn members every week, the equivalent of a professional joining the site at faster than one member per second.

We're making great progress toward our ultimate goal: to connect all of the world's professionals to make them more productive and successful.

LinkedIn which was established in May 2003 claimed ultimately that its purpose is to provide professionals the ability to link up with other likeminded individuals. It has already integrated Facebook and Twitter so that your professional followers can see your tweets displayed on your profile.

LinkedIn recently updated its on-site advertising platform as well to provide advertisers with more control over their campaigns, which should increase the relevancy of their efforts.

Amazon Cloud Player Released

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 12:38 AM PDT

Amazon has released "Cloud Player", a streaming music service. Rather than stream a library of predetermined music (e.g. Pandora, Spotify), Cloud Player lets you upload your existing music library and stream it from any computer or Android device. And it's not just working on desktop web browsers, it works on Android devices too.

One important place it doesn't work though: iPhones, iPads, iPod touches — no iOS devices.

Cloud Player is free for up to 5GB, with upgrades from 20 to 1000GB priced at $20 to $1000. Users can transfer purchases from the Amazon store, or upload their own (even from non-DRM'd iTunes purchases). The Amazon MP3 app is available in the Android Market, and along with the recent launch of their own Appstore, Amazon seems to be fully backing Google's mobile OS. It is possible that they will release a native Cloud Player for iOS, but it will be up to Apple to approve it.

Here’s the full press release.

Introducing Amazon Cloud Drive, Amazon Cloud Player for Web, and Amazon Cloud Player for Android
Buy anywhere, play anywhere and keep all your music in one place
Start with 5 GB of free Cloud Drive storage – upgrade to 20 GB free with purchase of any MP3 album

SEATTLE, Mar 29, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) –

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) today announced the launch of Amazon Cloud Drive (www.amazon.com/clouddrive), Amazon Cloud Player for Web (www.amazon.com/cloudplayer) and Amazon Cloud Player for Android (www.amazon.com/cloudplayerandroid). Together, these services enable customers to securely store music in the cloudand play it on any Android phone, Android tablet, Mac or PC, wherever they are. Customers can easily upload their music library to Amazon Cloud Drive and can save any new Amazon MP3 purchases directly to their Amazon Cloud Drive for free.

“We’re excited to take this leap forward in the digital experience,” said Bill Carr, vice president of Movies and Music at Amazon. “The launch of Cloud Drive, Cloud Player for Web and Cloud Player for Android eliminates the need for constant software updates as well as the use of thumb drives and cables to move and manage music.”

“Our customers have told us they don’t want to download music to their work computers or phones because they find it hard to move music around to different devices,” Carr said. “Now, whether at work, home, or on the go, customers can buy music from Amazon MP3, store it in the cloud and play it anywhere.”

Store Music for Free

Customers automatically start with 5 GB of Cloud Drive storage to upload their digital music library, and those who purchase an Amazon MP3 album will be upgraded to 20 GB of Cloud Drive space. New Amazon MP3 purchases saved directly to Cloud Drive are stored for free and do not count against a customer’s storage quota.

Adding Music to Cloud Drive

Amazon’s easy uploading process makes it simple for customers to save their music library to their Cloud Drive. Files can be stored in AAC or MP3 formats and will be uploaded to Cloud Drive in the original bit rate. Customers can hand-pick particular songs, artists, albums or playlists to upload or simply upload their entire music library.

Cloud Player for Web

Customers who have a computer with a Web browser can listen to their music. Cloud Player for Web currently supports Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari for Mac, and Chrome. Cloud Player for Web lets customers easily manage their music with download and streaming options. Customers don’t need to worry about regularly updating software on their computer to enjoy music, and Amazon MP3 customers can continue to use iTunes and Windows Media Player to add their music to their iPods and MP3 players.

Cloud Player for Android

Cloud Player for Android is now bundled into the new version of the Amazon MP3 App; it includes the full Amazon MP3 Store and the mobile version of Cloud Player. Customers can use the app to play music stored on their Cloud Drive and music stored locally on their device. Features include the ability to search and browse by artist, album or song, create playlists and download music from Cloud Drive.

Secure Storage

Customers never need to worry about losing their music collection to a hard drive crash again. Files are securely stored on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and each file is uploaded to Cloud Drive in its original bit rate. Customers can buy music anywhere and know that their MP3s are safely stored in Cloud Drive and accessible from any device.

Store More than Music

Cloud Drive allows customers to upload and store all kinds of digital files; music, photos, videos and documents can be stored securely and are available via web browser on any computer. In addition to the 5 GB of free storage, customers can purchase storage plans starting at $20 a year for 20 GB.

Apple iPad 2 vs iPad 1

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 11:32 PM PDT

The tablet market is dominating since 2010 by the Apple’s two awesome tablet and it’s iPad 2 and iPad1. To compete with the Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Blackberry PlayBook, Dell Streak 7, HTC Flyer and LG Optimus Pad, Apple recently released it’s second generation iPad that is iPad 2.

Let’s have a close look of both these tablets.

Hardware

1. iPad 2 is amazingly slim and light, it's just 8.8 mm (0.34 inches) thin and weighs 1.33 pounds, that is 33% thinner and 15% lighter than iPad. But still the display (9.7 inches, 1024×768 pixels with IPS technology) and the body are the same (Single slab of aluminum in the back and the face is the same scratch resistance oleophobic coated glass). Only a slight different in the design, iPad 2 has angled edges. The edges are tapered to reduce weight.

2. Two cameras are new in iPad 2, a 5 MP rare camera with the capability for 720p HD video recording and a front-facing camera for video chat using FaceTime. There is no flash for the camera.

3. More powerful 1 GHz dual core A5 processor is used in iPad 2. iPad is built with 1GHz A4 processor.

4. Main memory is doubled, iPad 2 has 512 MB while iPad has only 256 MB.

Performance

1. iPad 2 offers better multitasking experience with the support of 1GHz dual core high performance A5 application processor, 512 MB RAM and the improved iOS 4.3.

2. The new A5 processor's clock speed is twice faster than A4 and 9 times better (in practice we can expect 5 – 7 times better performance) on graphics while the power consumption remains same.

3. Excellent browsing experience – the Safari browser is improved with Nitro JavaScript engine with the iOS 4.3 upgrade. When both run iOS 4.3, iPad 2 shows about 80% better performance than iPad and pages load around 35% faster than iPad.

Apple iPad 2 will be a benchmark product in Apple's Smartphone and Tablet Family, it gives an excellent performance.

Additional Features

1. HDMI capability – you can connect to HDTV via Apple digital AV adapter (cost an extra US$39). It has HDMI mirroring capability but mirroring is not available for video playback.

2. The new operating system iOS 4.3 has improved on some features and added additional features like iTunes home sharing, PhotoBooth, improved iMovie ($4.99 from App Store) and improved AirPlay. With improved AirPlay you can wirelessly stream your media content to HDTV or speakers via AppleTV.

3. Preference for iPad Switch to mute or for rotation lock and parental control to restrict access to some applications are two other new features in iOS 4.3.

4. New application GarageBand ($4.99 from App Store)

However iPad is also compatible with iOS 4.3 and iPad users can upgrade their OS to 4.3. Now it is iOS 4.3.1 (released 25 March 2011)

Apple Patched Untethered Jailbreak Exploit in iOS 4.3.1 Firmware Update

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 10:07 PM PDT

iPhone hacker, Comex has updated everyone with few unexpected tweets. According to his tweet, Apple has patched his untethered jailbreak exploit in iOS 4.3.1 firmware update. Hopefully, we have other solution coming soon!

Here’s the original tweet:

From his tweet:

As noticed by @0naj, my kernel exploit was fixed in 4.3.1.

I try not to be paranoid, but it is really hard to explain this as anything but a leak.

The funny thing is that my "new" kernel exploit is actually the kernel exploit used by JailbreakMe 2.0. It was never properly fixed.

It stayed there from 4.0.2 through 4.3, but was magically found in time for 4.3.1. well, go go @MuscleNerd and @i0n1c I guess

During the last days Comex looking for a new exploit to get an untethered jailbreak and he mentions some details about his "new" kernel exploit. He claims it is actually the same kernel exploit that was used in JailbreakMe 2.0.

Now, jailbreakers and unlockers will have to look out for another jailbreak tool, which will probably come out from Chronic Dev team. We can't expect anything from GeoHot, as he is busy with his legal battle. Other jailbreak tool developers were also waiting for Comex, and now it looks like there won't be any untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 4.3.1 firmware.

Untethered iOS 4.3 Jailbreak Teaser Video Released

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 09:56 AM PDT

Stefan Hessar (ion1c) has posted a video according to which iOS 4.3.1 has already been JailBroken. The video shows iPad touch 4G jailbroken using his untethered jailbreak. Check the video after a quick break!

We know that ion1c and comex have found different exploit for iOS 4.3 jailbreak and confirmed through a video. MuscleNerd suggested that iOS 4.3.1 could have closed the comex loophole as the chances were quite low but it seems that ion1c exploit still exists that lead to an untethered jailBroken iPod Touch 4G.

Stefan has announced that he will not be releasing his jailbreaking tool but will give the untether. Here is what he has announced:

In the video you can see how I switch off the iPod, then restart it, show the version, show that it is tethered and has the multitasking gestures, i show that you can buy ringtones and then I show cydia and the ninja jump game from last time.

Because several people misunderstood me in the past:

* I repeatedly stated that I will not release a jailbreak tool – I will only give out the untether. I did not try yet, but if it is feasible the untether could be a cydia package.
* While the vulnerability I use is in the iPad 2 kernel my untether will NOT SUPPORT the iPad 2, because there is no way to install it there (bootrom exploits fixed). – however Comex is working on that part.
* I am not giving out any ETA again, because the Jailbreak community is simply nuts. Last time I gave an ETA and even before that had passed I got constantly insulted by people that were demanding an immediate release. Sorry guys the more you insult people with the knowledge to actually do what YOU WANT the less motivation there is to use our free time to give it to you.
* The only reason why I did not finish the untether before the ETA was due to unexpected work overload in my real job. It had nothing todo with the untether being too hard or unreal.
* I don't know why the dev team has not released a redsn0w that does tethered jailbreak for 4.3.1 – I would prefer that to be available, cause sn0wbreeze obviously does not work 100% yet.
* If you want to learn more about iPhone kernel hacking/exploitation you should come to SyScan Singapore at the end of April

Report: No iPhone 5 This June

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 09:16 AM PDT

Traditionally, Apple unveils the newest iPhone every June at WWDC, along with iPod Touches in September and new iPads in March. But according to a report this year's event in June will be 100-percent software news.

Jim Dalrymple at The Loop reported Monday that sources have informed him that the upcoming WWDC in June is a “software show,” and “not a hardware event.” This year, Apple reportedly plans to focus on iOS, which powers the iPhone and iPad, as well as the upcoming release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

Apple puts out one of these WWDC announcements every year, so let's take a look:

* WWDC 2010: Apple emphasizes iPad development and iPhone OS 4 (iOS 4), we get iPhone 4
* WWDC 2009: Apple emphasizes Snow Leopard and iPhone OS 3.0 development, we get iPhone 3GS
* WWDC 2008: Apple emphasizes OS X Leopard and iPhone OS X, we get iPhone 3G
* WWDC 2007: Apple emphasizes OS X, we get iPhone (pre-announced at Macworld)

If the iPhone 5 doesn't debut in June, it really could shake up the perceived status quo in Apple's perceived iOS device release schedule.
