Lineup announced for 2011 Coachella music festival

Colleges and universities throughout the U.S. host annual music and arts festivals in order to provide entertainment for their student populations. However, there are three prominent events in the U.S. that draw tens of thousands of college students every year: Coachella, Bonaroo and Lollapalooza.

In between their college classes on Wednesday, many students eagerly searched online for the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival lineup. The three-day event â€" which takes place on the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California â€" is scheduled for April 15 through April 17. Organizers have announced that Kings of Leon will headline the first night, Arcade Fire the second and Kanye West will deliver the closing performance on Sunday.

In addition, popular artists such as The Strokes, The Black Keys, Animal Collective, Interpol, Nas and Damien Marley have been confirmed to appear at the event. Students who are not overwhelmed by education costs can purchase a three-day pass for $269. Individuals who have significantly saved on their college tuition over the last year may be tempted to buy a VIP festival pass for $699.

Coachella sold single-day passes until last year. Paul Tollett, the festival's organizer, said that the change was part of an effort to enhance the experience for individuals who stay for the entire weekend, according to the Los Angeles Times. By removing single-day passes, Tollett said that foot traffic around the venue will be reduced, and local hotel rooms will open up.

Students who cannot afford to attend any of the major music and arts festivals may consider visiting smaller events throughout the U.S. For example, South Carolina-based Anderson University will present its annual Festival of Keys on the weekend of February 11 to February 12. The engagement will feature performances from the area's top pianists.

Individuals who are receiving their distance education in other countries have plenty of aveneues for entertainment, as well. In Vancouver, the annual Jazz Festival will take place at Clark College next week. Students who are studying abroad in Europe also have a wide selection of music concerts to attend, although some of the most renowned events â€" such as Glastonbury in England â€" do not occur until the summer.

Not all festivals at colleges and universities center around music. For instance, Iowa-based Luther College will host the second annual Oneota Film Festival this weekend, which will feature more than 25 nationally and internationally acclaimed films.
