Robotic Hand Same As Human One Posted: 21 Feb 2011 04:03 AM PST Robotic hand nearly identical to a human one with 20WPM and ready to embrace infinite monkey theorem.Engineers built this Dexterous Anthropomorphic Robotic Typing (DART) hand to mimic the real deal and down to individually-actuating three-segment digits and 110 degrees of wrist rotation in a package the size of a real human arm……… Human hands have evolved over millions of years into four fingers and a thumb that can precisely manipulate a wide variety of objects. In a recent study, researchers have attempted to recreate the human hand by building a biomimetic robotic hand that they have optimized to achieve near-human appearance and performance. The researchers, Nicholas Thayer and Shashank Priya from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia have published their study on the robotic hand in a recent issue of Smart Materials and Structures. The researchers call the hand a dexterous anthropomorphic robotic typing hand or DART hand, as the main objective was to demonstrate that the hand could type on a computer keyboard. They showed that a single DART hand could type at a rate of 20 words per minute, compared to the average human typing speed of 33 words per minute with two hands. The researchers predict that two DART hands could type at least 30 words per minute. Ultimately, the DART hand could be integrated into a humanoid robot for assisting the elderly or disabled people, performing tasks such as typing, reaching objects and opening doors. The human hand has about 40 muscles that provide 23 degrees of freedom in the hand and wrist. To replicate these muscles, the researchers used servo motors and wires extending throughout the robotic hand, wrist and forearm. The robotic hand encompassed a total of 19 motors and achieved 19 degrees of freedom. One small difference between the DART hand and the human hand is that each finger in the robotic hand is controlled independently. In the human hand, muscles are sometimes connected at the tendons so they can move joints in more than one finger. The robotic hand can be controlled by input text which comes from either a keyboard or a voice recognition program. When typing finger receives a command to position itself above the correct letter on the keyboard. The finger presses the key with a specific force and the letter is checked for accuracy; if there is a typo, the hand presses the delete key.During the past several years, robotic hands with varying numbers of fingers have been developed for a variety of purposes, from prosthetics to manufacturing. But as far as the researchers know, no robotic hand can accurately type at a keyboard at human speed. When the researchers compared the functional potential of the DART hand to other robotic hands, the DART hand had an overall functional advantage. |

Light Peak – High Speed Connection Technology By Apple Coming Soon Posted: 21 Feb 2011 12:14 AM PST CNET have reported that Apple has announced to introduce its new high speed connection technology named as Intel's Light Peak coming very soon. Meanwhile, accordimg to Intel, Light Peak is significantly faster than even USB 3.0, carrying data at 10 gigabits per second in both directions simultaneously. Connection speeds will not be affected by the transition to copper. Apple is expected to adopt this technology in the near future–but likely use a name other than Light Peak, a source familiar with this aspect of Apple's plans said. Intel has said in the past that the first products using Light Peak should appear in the first half of 2011. The rumored MacBook Pro update could be a heavily Intel-flavored affair, if the new laptops sport Sandy Bridge processors and Light Peak. After the problems Intel has suffered surrounding the Sandy Bridge chipset flaw, it could use a shot of good publicity Apple's announcement might provide. |
Rumour: Apple is Working On Bigger iPod touch Posted: 20 Feb 2011 11:36 PM PST According to AppleInsider Apple may be plans to bring bigger iPod touch or smaller iPad. The device is sort of 6-inch screen, but some speculations says it's more likely to be a big iPod Touch than a small iPad. The size of the device is expected to have the screen size between the iPod touch and the iPad. Apple Insider's informant is none other than Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who correctly predicted last May that the iPhone 4 would sport the 960×640 resolution Retina display and come loaded with twice the RAM of the iPad. According to Kuo's most recent prediction, the iPad 3 will have a screen with double the resolution — 2048×1536 — of the current iPad. It was originally rumored that the iPad 2 would get the Retina display upgrade. But subsequent reports indicated that the yet-to-be-confirmed second-generation device will come with a display that is thinner than the original iPad, but which has the same 1024×768 resolution. This, Kuo told Apple Insider last month, is "because of limited manufacturing yield rates," which make it impossible for screen producers to meet Apple's demands in time for the iPad 2′s release. All that said, the iPad 3 might not actually be an "iPad" at all. Instead, rumors indicate that the device may be placed into the iPod line. Whatever it's called, the device's arrival appears imminent. Kuo has confirmed that a device, sized between the current iPad and the 3.5-inch iPhone and running Apple's iOS operating system, is in the works, with a release date in the second half of 2011. Czech site SuperApple reported Friday that a similar-sounding device, with a screen around six inches, is on its way. |

Kinect With iPhone and iPad Hacked[Video] Posted: 20 Feb 2011 10:50 PM PST The hacking and jailbreaking community has used iPhone and iPad to control hurling digital balls while playing "Dodgeball" on Microsoft Kinect. The integration with WP7 comes where a phone can be used to actually control the balls being thrown. The graphics for the game and the iDevice controls aren’t nearly as pretty as Microsoft’s cross-platform gaming solution, but the end result is pretty much the same — flingin’ balls with a phone while your friend dodges them courtesy of Kinect. Meanwhile, Frog Design has added a Human Tetris game to the Kinect’s repertoire where players perfect their Vogue-ing skills by striking a pose to match an approaching cut-out on screen. Check out the video.

Download Sn0wbreeze 2.2.1 to Fixes Verizon iPhone & iBooks Issues Posted: 20 Feb 2011 10:16 PM PST Just a few minutes ago iPhone developer iH8sn0w has pushed out an updated version of Sn0wbreeze 2.2.1 which now supports, Verizon iPhone running iOS 4.2.6, iBooks fix works 100 % and he has also implemented drag & drop IPSW file. The previous version was Sn0wbreeze 2.2R3. The tool comes with minor issues faced in the previous version. For those who are unaware of Sn0wbreeze jailbreak tool, it helps you build a custom .IPSW file on Windows operating system very similar to the process of creating .IPSW using PwnageTool for Mac. For those who are unaware of the iBooks restriction, the version 1.2.1 of the iBooks denies to open books on the phones that are jailbroken. It is because Apple has implemented some anti jailbreaking tricks in it. iBooks is implemented with a process which involves the running of unsigned code attempts. These type of attempts are only executed by the jailbroken phones. So it will detect that you are using a jailbroken iPhone and will prompt you a message to restore your iPhone device. Intel To Build Up A New Factory Posted: 20 Feb 2011 09:30 AM PST Intel to spend $5 billion on new 14nm fab in Arizona.Intel Fab 42 will be the most advanced, high-volume semiconductor manufacturing facility in the world and will create thousands of construction and permanent manufacturing jobs at Intel’s Arizona site…….. Intel Corporation announced plans to invest more than $5 billion to build a new chip manufacturing facility at its site in Chandler, Ariz. The announcement was made by Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini during a visit by President Barack Obama at an Intel facility in Hillsboro, Ore.The new Arizona factory, designated Fab 42 will be the most advanced, high-volume semiconductor manufacturing facility in the world. Construction of the new fab is expected to begin in the middle of this year and is expected to be completed in 2013.While more than three-fourths of Intel’s sales come from outside of the United States, Intel manufactures three-fourths of its microprocessors in the United States. The addition of this new fab will increase the company’s American manufacturing capability significantly. Building the new fab on the leading-edge 14-nanometer process enables Intel to manufacture more powerful and efficient computer chips. The nanometer specification refers to the minimum dimensions of transistor technology. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter or the size one ninety-thousandth the width of an average human hair.Fab 42 will be built as a 300mm factory which refers to the size of the wafers that contain the computer chips. The project will create thousands of construction and permanent manufacturing jobs at Intel’s Arizona site. |
