Posted: 25 Feb 2011 10:04 PM PST Engadget has announced winners of the 2010 Engadget Editor's Choice Awards. Apple iPad wins "Gadget of the Year" award, Apple iPhone 4 is awarded as "Phone of the Year", Apple iPod touch wins best "Portable Media Device" award and Microsoft's Kinect wins both "Game Accessory of the Year" and "Peripheral of the Year" award. In most of the categories Apple gadgets were the winners or runner ups. This is what the editors' had to say about Apple iPhone 4, Apple iPad and Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360. Apple iPad – Gadget of the Year The iPad won this one going away — there's just no denying the influence Apple's tablet had on the industry this year. But we think the Evo 4G will be remembered as the first of an entirely new breed of smartphones, and that's pretty amazing too. Apple iPhone 4 – Phone of the Year We went endlessly back and forth on this one, but in the end the iPhone 4 won out — it's simply a more polished device than the Evo, and it set a dramatic new quality standard for mobile displays. Microsoft Kinect – Peripheral of the Year & Game Accessory of the Year What's the best thing you can buy for your game console, other than another disc? We'd recommend a motion controller, like the Kinect or PlayStation Move. Unfortunately, neither shipped with a killer app, but we'd give Kinect the edge — hacks demonstrate the potential for fabulous game experiences. Microsoft's Kinect 3D depth camera was originally designed for the Xbox 360, but it proved to be the year's most fantastic hackable toy when interfaced with a PC. Our runner-up: the first mass-market quadrocopter, the AR.Drone, a veritable flying platform for hacks of its own. Apple iPod touch – Portable Media Device Now in its fourth generation, the iPod touch is more dominant than ever, and with good reason. It's caught up to the iPhone 4 in terms of most key specs, and the App Store remains a huge advantage over the rest of the non-phone competition. If storage and sound quality is key, though, the Cowon X7 is tops. Thanks
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Now Available in Torrent Sites Posted: 25 Feb 2011 09:51 PM PST Developer preview version of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion has already been released by Apple. As soon as Apple seeded an early version of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion to the developers, it was only a matter of time, and now the disk image is being shared by a good few thousand of users on various torrent sites. Now you can download Mac OS X 10.7 Lion from various Torrent sites but it is not safe to download it from the torrent sites. According to 9to5Mac, an installed version of Lion will "phone home" to Apple with no telling whether the Cupertino outfit will seek to block users not already registered as a developer. Also, it really makes a little sense to download it from a shady site however when Apple offers a Mac Dev account for just $99. So it is wise to register in Mac developer account.
Rumour: iPad 2 Coming With Carbon Fiber Body Posted: 25 Feb 2011 09:35 PM PST According to John Gruber of Daring Fireball, iPad 2 may gain a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body. Gruber published a scathing review of Engadget’s latest rumor-backpedaling, where Josh Topolsky defended his sources who told him the iPad 2 would contain an SD card slot and a Retina Display screen, saying Apple changed these specs in the “eleventh hour.” Excerpt from the footnote can be read below I could publish things I'm only half-sure about, like the iPad 2 switching from aluminum to a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body, but I don't, because I'm only half-sure and I've only heard about it from second-hand sources who themselves are unsure about it. And even if I were to off-handedly mention such speculation, I'd do so in a footnote and take pains to emphasize the uncertain nature of the information and the second-hand status of the sources thereof. What I would never do is take a flyer and report uncertain speculation as a fact, and, if it wound up not panning out, chalk it up to Apple having changed things at the last moment rather than the report being flat-out wrong all along A move to carbon fiber for the iPad 2 body would certainly make sense for Apple, especially if it plans to upgrade the bodies of the rest of its mobile lineup, including the iPhone 5 this summer. George Hotz (geohot) On The Alyona Show “Beating Them in Court is Just a Start” Posted: 25 Feb 2011 09:12 PM PST PlayStation 3 jailbreaker GeoHot, was recently on The Alyona Show. When asked about whether he thinks the whole issue will blow over and whether he has a chance to beat Sony in court, GeoHot responded with the following: “Oh without a doubt. I think I will beat them. I think the reason they brought this suit is just to harass me and ‘this is what happens to you if you hack Sony products.’ Beating them in court is just a start.” Still, GeoHot did ask for financial help just last week, after releasing a rap video to poke fun at the whole situation. He has reportedly covered his legal costs and then some in just two days of donations. GeoHot still insists that Sony is suing the wrong guy since he is against mass piracy and does not distribute anyone’s copyrighted work but his own. His goal for the PS3 is to provide users a legitimate path to homebrew, which should be legal according to previous non-console court cases. He may be a little more confident about it than he should be, but in either case, the dude always makes me his fan with every single thing he does! |
