Palm Pixi Plus vs. HP Veer

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 04:53 AM PST

In this post you will find webOS battle between the Palm Pre 2 and the HP Pre 3,credit-card sized HP Veer will take the honors as the smallest webOS phone to date when it launches later this year……

HP recently announced HP Veer and it should make you pretty happy.Adding a slide out keyboard, instead of the candy-bar, fully-exposed keyboard of the Palm Pixi has its compromises. One of change is increase the thickness of the device from 10.85 mm to 15.1 mm and another change is that the removable battery seen on the Palm Pixi Plus is no more, the Veer uses a smaller non-removable 910 mAh battery. The screens are relatively unchanged, the 2.63 inch 400 x 320 pixel touchscreen of the Pixi Plus is .03 inches smaller on the Veer. The camera change up from 2-megapixels to 5-megapixels.Both phones offer 8GB of internal memory and bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. The Veer adds wireless n support, HSPA instead of HSDPA and touch-to-share capability. The bread and butter of the HP Veer can best be seen in processing power and memory. Now using a 800 MHz Qualcomm processor instead of the Pixi Plus' 600 MHz Qualcomm processor. The upgrade from 256MB to 512MB of RAM should also help in multi-tasking and overall device performance.

IBM Mira Supercomputer

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 02:50 AM PST

IBM has announced its latest entry into the world of high-performance computing with its Mira supercomputer.Based on next generation IBM Blue Gene the 10 petaflop Mira supercomputer will fuel national innovation. The system is to be installed at the Argonne National Laboratory and will be used to work through a variety of complex calculations to aid research into better battery technology……..

IBM announced that the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory will use IBM’s next-generation Blue Gene supercomputer to enable significant advances in areas such as designing ultra-efficient electric car batteries, understanding global climate change and exploring the evolution of our universe. The 10-petaflop IBM Blue Gene/Q supercomputer named Mira will be operational in 2012 and made available to scientists from industry, academia and government research facilities around the world.Argonne National Laboratory will use IBM’s next-generation Blue Gene/Q supercomputer to stoke economic growth and improve U.S. competitiveness for such challenges as designing electric car batteries, understanding climate change and exploring the evolution of the universe.

Mira will be twice as fast as today’s fastest supercomputer providing a strong science and technology engine that will fuel national innovation. Argonne is one of the U.S. Department of Energy‘s oldest and largest labs for science and engineering research, located some 20 minutes outside Chicago, IL (Feature Photo Service).Argonne’s current supercomputer Intrepid is an IBM Blue Gene/P machine capable of producing over 500 trillion calculations a second. Mira will be 20 times faster running programs at 10 quadrillion calculations a second.Argonne and DOE have selected 16 projects from a pool of proposals in a wide variety of disciplines that will be the first to gain access to Mira’s capabilities.

These span a diverse range of projects from reducing energy inefficiencies in transportation and developing advanced engine designs to spurring advances in energy technologies. The progress made during the Early Science Program should enable researchers to quickly leverage Mira’s computational capability to reach their science goals soon after it is deployed. Argonne anticipates that the new supercomputer will be one of the fastest and most energy efficient supercomputers in the world after its construction and installation are complete thanks to a combination of innovative new chip designs and extremely efficient water cooling.Argonne also envisions Mira as a stepping stone to exascale-class computers that will be faster than petascale-class computers by a factor of a thousand.Mira will offer an opportunity for scientists to become more familiar with the capabilities an exascale machine will offer and the programming changes it will require.

Once Mira is online, the DOE‘s Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) and the ASCR Leadership Computing Challenge (ALCC) programs will award blocks of computing time via a peer-reviewed competitive process to researchers who are working on scientific challenges that are best addressed by the capabilities of high-performance supercomputers.Blue Gene is one of 100 Icons of Progress in IBM’s 100 year history because it is a radical departure from the supercomputers of its time consuming only a fraction of the energy and floor space. The system is part of a collaboration between Argonne, IBM and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Blue Gene’s speed and expandability have enabled industry and the scientific community to address a wide range of complex problems and make more informed decisions.

A 3-megapixel camera has a camcorder and auto-focus, and there is a music player and Stereo Bluetooth connectivity, and a microSD slot for up to 32GB of memory. The Indulge comes with a 4GB microSD card that's preloaded with the movie "Ironman 2."

“The Galaxy Indulge integrates two of Samsung’s core product investments; the Android platform and bringing powerful and intuitive 4G-enabled devices to the U.S. market,” Omar Khan, chief strategy officer for Samsung Mobile, said in a statement. “The Galaxy Indulge is loaded with the speed of the Android OS, true mobile broadband connectivity and a 1GHz processor with rich multimedia features for premium movie and TV content.”

At the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in January, Verizon introduced the HTC Thunderbolt, calling it the "first 4G LTE smartphone." While the phone is rumored to go on sale Feb. 14, Verizon has so far only said that it's "coming soon." By the time it does, however, it may instead be the second 4G LTE smartphone.

LTE, according to a Feb. 8 report from research firm IHS iSuppli, is expected to be the predominant form of 4G worldwide, with subscriber numbers exceeding those of WiMAX—Sprint's 4G flavor of choice—by 2012. By 2014, WiMAX is expected to have 33.4 million subscribers worldwide, while LTE will claim more than 303 million users. To date, 10 operators have launched 4G LTE networks, though more than 30 are expected to power up in 2011.

MetroPCS currently offers 4G LTE service in 13 metropolitan areas, including Boston, Dallas-Forth Worth, Las Vegas, New York and San Francisco.

There will also be two plans offered for the smartphone: $50 for 1GB of data and $60 for unlimited data, both with unlimited voice and text. Suggested retail price for the handset will be $399 plus tax.

Firefox 4 Will Bring Official 64-Bit Support for Windows & Linux

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 02:02 PM PST

It seems this long wait is going to be over. Mozilla will bring 64-Bit support for both Windows & Linux with the release of upcoming Firefox 4. Not only that they have working Pre Beta version available for test already. Here we will share some inside and download link to that 64-Bit version.

Firefox 64 bit

Firefox is so far all 32-bit officially, and most essential plugin like Flash Player yet not have stable 64-bit version. But now most of us have 64-bit system, Mac is long ago 64-Bit. And now most of Windows Laptop been shipped with 64-Bit Windows 7(Home Premium or Ultimate or even Enterprise version). But due to lack of 64-Bit browser we are missing a lot performance boast. For hardcore web browser, this 64-bit support could come handy. Even a lot user been started using IE(Internet Explorer) after a long time due to their 64-bit Built-in support and smooth operation. There is huge complain that Firefox 4 Beta and stable 3.6.13(or more latest) are too much CPU consuming and getting slow if you open a lot tab and keep those open for long time, people reporting this problem for long time. Chrome getting market pretty fast but due to its each tab runs as separate instance(as a separate application) its also too heavy for heavy user. And mostly none of those browser support 64-Bit.

There was an unofficial 64-bit Firefox project for long time, but it was never close to stable and never got official approval. And mostly it does not had plugin support. But now Mozilla itself developing 64-bit version for both Linux(64-bit Intel) and Windows. Today Mozilla released Firefox 4.0 Beta 11, as they are very rapid developing project, they already working on Firefox 4.0 Pre Beta 12. As this Pre and Mozilla nightly built section is developers’ playground, so here everything supposed to be on test version. But we found that there is working 64-bit version for Windows and Linux.

Check out the screenshot

I am currently testing it. I previously worked in Mozilla project, so I am familiar with this stuff, it does not mean just a normal user could not use it, Anybody could use it, but here is some normal issue

1) If you install this or any Pre Built version it may replace your existing working stable version.

2) It will surely share your old Firefox profile, which will cause add-on crash and instability.

3) Most of the plugin like essential Flash Player, java wont work, so most site will look messy.

I am not discouraging you guys. Please go ahead and test, but I hope you understand what you are doing. And I plan to post another easy Know-how article on how to make it work as soon I test it and find working way.
