Apple App Store Subscriptions

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 01:24 AM PST

Apple announced it will begin taking subscriptions through its App Store for all publishers of content-based apps.Apple clarified the rules governing its new App Store subscription plan in which magazine, newspaper and other content publishers an finally start charging customers a recurring fee to access their regularly-updated material……..

Apple announced a new subscription service available to all publishers of content-based apps on the App Store including magazines, newspapers, video, music, etc. This is the same innovative digital subscription billing service that Apple recently launched with News Corp.’s “The Daily” app.Subscriptions purchased from within the App Store will be sold using the same App Store billing system that has been used to buy billions of apps and In-App Purchases. Publishers set the price and length of subscription (weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly). Then with one-click customers pick the length of subscription and are automatically charged based on their chosen length of commitment (weekly, monthly, etc.). Customers can review and manage all of their subscriptions from their personal account page including canceling the automatic renewal of a subscription. Apple processes all payments, keeping the same 30 percent share that it does today for other In-App Purchases.

Publishers who use Apple‘s subscription service in their app can also leverage other methods for acquiring digital subscribers outside of the app. Publishers must provide their own authentication process inside the app for subscribers that have signed up outside of the app.Apple does require that if a publisher chooses to sell a digital subscription separately outside of the app, that same subscription offer must be made available, at the same price or less, to customers who wish to subscribe from within the app. In addition, publishers may no longer provide links in their apps (to a web site, for example) which allow the customer to purchase content or subscriptions outside of the app.

Protecting customer privacy is a key feature of all App Store transactions. Customers purchasing a subscription through the App Store will be given the option of providing the publisher with their name, email address and zip code when they subscribe. The use of such information will be governed by the publisher’s privacy policy rather than Apple’s. Publishers may seek additional information from App Store customers provided those customers are given a clear choice, and are informed that any additional information will be handled under the publisher’s privacy policy rather than Apple‘s.

The revolutionary App Store offers more than 350,000 apps to consumers in 90 countries, with more than 60,000 native iPad apps. Customers of the more than 160 million iOS devices around the world can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.

Nvidia Tegra 3

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 12:55 AM PST

NVIDIA’s currently sampling a quad-core Tegra chip that is going by an internal name of Kal-El Tegra 3 or Kal-El features quad processing cores and a dozen graphics cores.Nvidia states that by their testing the new Tegra 3 offers double the processing power and triple the graphics power of the Tegra 2 and new chip will be capable of outputting 1440P video content and offer 300 DPI on devices with a 10.1″ display…….

The barely conceivable quad-core Tegra chip that it listed has now been made official by none other than NVIDIA itself, with the company also informing us that the new silicon is already sampling out to prospective clients. Known as Kal-El internally, this will most likely turn into NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 as and when it’s ready to enter the consumer market. A 2560 x 1440 stream was being decoded on a developmental device, scaled down to that slate’s native 1366 x 768 resolution, and additionally displayed on a connected 30-inch, 2560 x 1600 monitor. That entire voluminous workload was being handled in real time by Kal-El and we saw no signs of it struggling.

The quad-core newbie provides roughly double the processing power of Tegra 2 and triple the graphics-crunching prowess. This was in large part down to the full dozen GPU cores contained within Kal-El, though before you freak out about battery-draining insanity, NVIDIA claims things are much, much more efficient as well up to 12 hours of HD video playback are promised under the right circumstances. The design would closely follow Qualcomm‘s own ambitions and see a 1.5GHz, quad-core design that would be more than twice as fast as any Tegra 2. BSON heard that triple the graphics power would be onboard to decode Blu-ray video and to power a 1920×1200 main display.

Test samples of the Tegra 3 may have already started leaving the factory at the end of last year, but NVIDIA isn’t expected to ship the new components until fall this year. The timing is such that it’s more likely Tegra 3 won’t be in stores until early 2012 for most devices. The chip could make for the second major leap in mobile performance in a single year as dual-core tablets and smartphones will finally ship on a wide scale in the first few months of the year. Tegra 2 hardware will ship in the Motorola Atrix 4G and Xoom as well as many other Android-powered hardware.
