Nissan ESFLOW

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 02:51 AM PST

Nissan unveils sexy ESFLOW concept EV sports car with a roofline inspired by modern Z cars and an elongated bonnet reminiscent of the original 240Z o titillate our inner gearhead.Nissan Esflow debuting at the 2011 Geneva International Motor Show in March……

Nissan ESFLOW electric sports car proves it’s possible to remain environmentally sympathetic without having to give up the joy of driving. It looks like a sports car, handles like a sports car and performs like one too. Using technology pioneered in the award-winning Nissan LEAF, the EV concept shows that driving can still be as much fun tomorrow as it is today.Nissan has a reputation for creating some of the most exhilarating sports cars on the market. Nissan has also developed the world’s first practical Zero Emission family car, the Nissan LEAF.

Now Nissan has put that expertise together. It has captured the excitement of a sports car and the environmental benefits of an electric vehicle and blended them into one dramatic two-seater concept ESFLOW has been created from the ground up as a pure electric vehicle, to give an idea how a Zero Emission sports car of the future might look. Living ecologically has often been seen as an act of austerity – to save one’s environmental conscience sacrifices must be made. ESFLOW is here to address that misconception.

Owning an ecologically sound car does not have to come at the expense of driving enjoyment. The briefest glance at the ESFLOW is enough to tell you what kind of car it is: a long bonnet leading into a steeply raked, wrap around windscreen, the compact cabin placing the occupants bang on the car’s centre of gravity, hunched arches over ultra-low profile tyres wrapped around six spoke wheels.

The ESFLOW is based on existing technology, implemented in innovative ways. An attractive, head turning composite body covers an aluminium chassis, incorporating its own roll cage. The powertrain unit, which employs the same technologies installed in the Nissan LEAF is tuned to offer a sporty driving experience.ESFLOW is rear-wheel drive and it runs on two motors. The car’s graceful proportions allow the twin electric motors to be placed above the axis of the rear wheels n a mid-ship position. These motors independently control the left and right wheels, and so the torque is optimized to ensure outstanding vehicle stability and control as well as efficient power regeneration. The motors produce enough torque in an instant for it to reach a 100kph in under 5 seconds.

Power for the motors comes from the same laminated lithium-ion battery packs used in the Nissan LEAF, but in ESFLOW the packs are located along the axis of the front and rear wheels. This centralizes the mass of the car and thus its rotation point close to the driver’s hips. These cleverly positioned batteries enable the car to travel over 240km on one charge. An aluminium chassis has been built around the drive train, taking full advantage of the opportunities that Zero Emission electric propulsion provides. Power cells are incorporated in such a way that they benefit ESFLOW’s strength and poise, not detract from them.

The high waistline afforded by the ESFLOW‘s classic sports car proportions allows strong, yet unobtrusive roll bars incorporated in to the structure behind the seats to safely take the entire load of the car in the event of a roll over, negating the need for obtrusive, thick, reinforced A-pillars and the blind spots they inevitably create. The ESFLOW is undoubtedly an attractive car. Crisp, clean lines not only convey the purity of its sporting potential, but suggest the clarity of electric power. The colour scheme chosen for the concept car is inspired by glaciers – highly reflective solidified liquid with blue tints in its shadows.

Blue LEDs accentuate the futuristic lights slashed into the bodywork both front and rear. Where the Nissan LEAF‘s protrusive headlights are used to guide airflow around the door mirrors, this is not needed on ESFLOW as the mirrors have been replaced with minute rear view cameras at the base of its A-pillars. The cabin of the ESFLOW is clean and open and weight saving has been a priority throughout its design, but it is still a comfortable and pleasant place to sit. By far the heaviest components in modern cars’ interiors are the steel framed, thickly upholstered and increasingly motorized seats.

The seats themselves are upholstered in gold leather and perforated gold suede while the doors are trimmed in dark blue leather and suede. The blue and gold motif, the colour of sparks, is continued across the dashboard which is also adorned with silver carbon trim, and features four multifunction illuminated LCD displays.Daniel, an ESFLOW owner, works in tech, but lives for the weekend. On Friday night after work, he gets behind the wheels of his ESFLOW which instantly links with his pocket PDA and determines the fastest route to his girlfriend’s home. Finding street side parking is a synch as the ESFLOW’s compact dimensions allow it to slip in to the narrowest of spaces.

On Sunday he drives through the mountains for leisure. ESFLOW‘s superb weight distribution and unobstructed view ahead enables him to effortlessly nail every apex. His descent from the mountains is more relaxed and he allows the ESFLOW to overrun on the long sweeping curves, turning the potential energy he and the car gained climbing up the gradients back in to electrical energy he can use once he hits the roads around Barcelona. As his ESFLOW sips energy in its garage Daniel prepares himself for the week ahead, batteries fully recharged.

Largest Public Library in United Kingdom – Library of Birmingham

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 01:04 AM PST

Mecanoo designed the Library of Birmingham, England with the goal of solidifying Centenary Square as a center for arts, culture, and entertainment. The library design aims to integrate the buoyant cultural aspect of the zone, and transform that into well defined spaces within the building. It will be amalgamated to the Repertory Theater next door, even sharing programs and events, along with a 600 seat theater inside the library itself.

The Library will also feature a unique outdoor amphitheatre for performances that is sunk into the ground and attached on an underground level to the main structure.

To pay tribute to the industrial artisan history of Birmingham, Mecanoo added the ornamental circle/star shaped design that adorns each exterior wall. The façade masks an interior designed around eight cylindrical rotundas that house various collections and let in natural light. To engage visitors to the surrounding Centenary Square, Mecanoo added a cantilevered balcony to overhang the square.

Environmental sustainability was a key goal, among other measures, they employed sun shading and reflective materials in the windows of the transparent façade, which will also respond to environmental conditions and either open or close for fresh air intake and flow. They are also incorporating grey water pumps and taking advantage of the passive solar heating and natural lighting made possible by the facade.

Upon completion, the Library of Birmingham will be the largest public library in the United Kingdom and will replace the Birmingham Central Library, a brutalist design set to be demolished after the Library of Birmingham is completed in 2013.

Report: Steve Jobs Still Working On iPad 2 and iPhone 5

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 09:01 PM PST

According to Wall Street Jounal report, Apple's CEO Steve Jobs may officially be on a break for health reasons but he's still working on the company's products. Earlier this week Steve Jobs has also been seen in Apple Cupertino Campus and in Palo alto in public with Apple Executives.

From the report:

The 55-year-old Mr. Jobs, whose ailment hasn't been disclosed, has been taking business meetings at home and on the phone, these people said.

He also has been seen on Apple's Cupertino, Calif., campus and in public in Palo Alto, Calif., with a company executive, said people familiar with the matter.

Among products he is continuing to work on are the next version of the iPad tablet computer, expected out in the next couple of months, and a new iPhone, expected to be released this summer, said two of these people.

"Steve is the CEO of Apple and during his medical leave he'll continue to be involved in major strategic decisions," said an Apple spokeswoman. Messrs. Jobs and Cook didn't respond to requests for comment.

Jobs announced his break from business last month, with Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook continuing to manage daily operations.

An Apple spokesperson said that Jobs would remain involved in strategic decisions and it appears this is the case.

The fact that Jobs stayed involved in Apple's management during previous absences indicates that this is likely to the case again.

And so it seems the sources are letting us know that there is no need for people to go elsewhere for their latest tablet or for shareholders to get the jitters.

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 08:47 PM PST

Apple has just released an update to iOS 4.2.6 with bug fixes for Verizon iPhone 4. The major bug that was been reported is the Personal Hotspot data reporting accuracy. iOS 4.2.6 update has fixed the bug and according to the notes, the Personal Hotspot data usage is now working fine. But in order to use the personal hotspot tethering plan you have to pay $20 USD per month for 2GB data and an additional $20 USD for per GB will be applicable.

Additionally, Apple has introduced design changes for Verizon's CDMA iPhone 4 that may fix the antenna reception problems.

iSuppli Senior Director Andrew Rassweiler, told:

Apple's new designs always exhibit changes, evolution and optimization. This approach is evident not only in the antenna design but also in items like the integrated GPS functionality and the shrinking of the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo module.

This prompt fix released by Apple and Verizon would end nightmares for the Verizon iPhone 4 users with previous bugs on over billing practices.

Resembling the current Nokia N8, the concept was jointly created by new best-buds Microsoft and Nokia, with Nokia's flair for all things multi-colored shining right on through.

As Engadget's Vlad Savov points out though, it's worth remembering that concept doesn't always equal production handset, so don't start pining for the bright pink loveliness just yet!

Rumor: Apple Preparing To Integrate Mac App Store In iTunes

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 08:17 PM PST

SlideToMac claims that Apple may be preparing to integrate the Mac App Store into iTunes. The rumor arrives via the a screenshot, which very much resembles that Mac App Store holding a blank page in iTunes that resembled the one from Mac App Store app when it was launched back in January this year.

The site claims they discovered the page simply by navigating to the iTunes App Store this afternoon, only to be greeted with the words "Coming Soon". While screenshots themselves are not conclusive proof, it may suggest the two stores are about to merge.

Facebook’s New Messaging System To Be Available To All Users

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 08:03 PM PST

Facebook's aggressive new messaging system was announced last November. It’s been a long time since then. At last facebook has started rolling out the new Messages system to all users.

A Facebook spokesperson declined comment when asked how many people currently have access to the new messages platform. We'd received that same response when we'd covered last month's phase-in of additional users.

We've begun expanding the rollout of Messages to everyone on Facebook. This will happen gradually over the next few weeks.

In case you don't already know, here is how it works: Facebook Messages (Mail) will use your current public vanity url. If you currently have a www.facebook.com/yourname, you be able to register your yourname@facebook.com vanity. Whenever someone sends you a message on that address, you either get it in the chat box, your inbox or if you have an iPhone; all your messages will be pushed on it and you can reply back quickly and easily through the medium which is more accessible for you. The best part about it is that you can go through the history seamlessly.

Nokia Embraces Windows Phone 7, Kills Off Symbian OS

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 07:51 PM PST

Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop has confirmed that Nokia will adopt Microsoft’s Windows Phone as its primary smartphone strategy. Not only that, the company has also announced a "Broad strategic partnership" with Microsoft "that combines the respective strengths of our companies and builds a new global mobile ecosystem."

Before announcement, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop had stated that Nokia needed to “decide how we either build, catalyze or join an ecosystem” to change its fortunes. In the end it decided to partner with Microsoft and join the Windows Phone 7 ecosystem.

Nokia had approached Google about using its Android OS, but ultimately decided it didn’t want to play in a commodity market, Elop said. Adopting Android would also give Google too much of the services revenue associated with the phones, he said.

In the competition between mobile phone manufacturers and OS vendors to make their platforms more attractive to developers and customers, Research In Motion isn’t even in the running, according to Elop. “This is now a three-horse race,” he said.

In its partnership with Microsoft, Nokia will contribute its hardware design and language support, and help bring Windows Phone to a larger range of price points, market segments and geographies, the companies said in an open letter from Elop and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Nokia won’t abandon its own platforms, Symbian and MeeGo, yet. The company still plans to put out a “MeeGo-related” product later this year, it said.

With the new strategy, Nokia is hoping to put an end to a downward spiral that started in 2007, the year in which the first version of Apple’s iPhone arrived and Google announced Android.

At the time, Nokia’s smartphone market share was almost 50 percent for the full year, compared to Apple’s 2.7 percent, according to Gartner. The first Android-based phone still hadn’t arrived. But by the fourth quarter of 2010, Nokia’s market share had dropped to 30.8 percent, Android had caught up and Apple had increased its market share to 16 percent.

Friday’s change is an admission that its own platform has faltered, and by going with Windows Phone 7, the company is no longer in control of its own destiny, Wood said.

Other services will also get joined together. OviMaps will be integrated with Bing Maps to improve Microsoft’s offering, and Nokia’s content store will be folded into Microsoft’s Marketplace. As you would expect, both Office and Xbox Live will also be making their way to Nokia handsets. The announcement is exciting, not because it means there will yet another Windows Phone maker on the market, but because Nokia will actively work with Microsoft to improve the mobile OS, and expand the ecosystem in a legitimate attempt to challenge Android and iOS.

Report: iOS 5 Will Bring Revamped Notifications System for iOS

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 07:35 PM PST

According to CultofMac source, Apple is finally working on a new notification system for iOS and will be buying a small company to build it's technology so that they can implement it in to the operating system.

It is no secret that Android's, WP7's and webOS' notification system offers far better experience than iOS' current notification system, which is intrusive at best.

Apple's pop-up notification system for new text messages, voicemails and the like has often been criticized as one of the weakest parts of the iOS. Notifications are intrusive, modal and often cryptic. It's a mess.

The company Apple is trying to acquire is still a mystery, CultofMac or it's source couldn't be able to find it, the only thing they have said is the company already has an iPhone app in the App Store.

GeoHot Must Hand Over His Hard Drive To Sony

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 07:25 PM PST

The legal battle between Sony and George Hotz (geohot), took a surprising turn. District Judge Susan Illston ruled from the bench, ordering geohot to hand over his computer hard drives to Sony. The electronics maker will be allowed to examine the drives with a fine tooth comb and retrieve information.

Geohot's attorney, Stewart Kellar did try to block to move, but got short shrift from Illston.

"Here, I find probable cause that your client has got these things on his computer," she said. "It's a problem when more than one thing is kept on the computer. I'll make sure the order is and will be that Sony is only entitled to isolate … the information on the computer that relates to the hacking of the PlayStation."

Sony is also asking Judge Illston to order Google to surrender the IP addresses and other identifying information of those who have viewed or commented about the jailbreak video on Hotz' private YouTube page. The game maker is also demanding that Twitter provide the identities of a host of hackers who first unveiled a limited version of the hack in December.

A hearing on that is scheduled next month. Sony is seeking unspecified damages.

A Car That Can Run On Water Too – sandYou

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 07:47 AM PST

The sandYou concept vehicle is an amphibious, surfboard-inspired, electric-powered vehicle. Materials used to construct the sandYou concept car were chosen to improve buoyancy, boost the vehicle's surf theme and reduce weight.

The main frame will consist of four light seats made of wood and tissue, with small, dainty boxes attached to their topsides for carrying of personal items. A foot pedal will also be provided in front of the seats, just in case one has the mind for sailing. The roof will be composed of simple canvas, for blocking out the sun, but again it can be converted into a sail by simply cranking the winch. Duality is seriously the name of the game in this unorthodox yet delectable green design concept.

The amphibious sandYou concept will be lots more fun than a single-function dune buggy for those long beach play days.

Obama to Unveils $18 Billion Wireless Plan

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 07:35 AM PST

US President Barack Obama has outlined his government’s plans to bring wireless Internet connections to around 98 per cent of the population. Mr Obama deliver his remarks at Northern Michigan University in Barack Marquette, which partnered with communications firms to establish an network to a off-campus wireless network, 4G which to help students to a in Obama's University financed rural locations.

In an afternoon speech at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Obama is to explain how he plans to bring mobile broadband connections to 98 percent of the American people in five years, a goal announced last month during his State of the Union address.

The administration has touted the ability of wireless broadband connections to transform local economies and the way schools, doctors and utility companies operate.

Obama will announce more than $18 billion in federal funds for his wireless goals. About $5 billion currently being used for rural phone subsidies would be repurposed to build cell towers and backhaul networks to towns without mobile broadband services. Fire, police and other emergency responders would get $10.7 billion in federal support to build a mobile Internet network that allows them to communicate and exchange videos and e-mail. An additional $3 billion would go to research and development for wireless technologies that can be used for education, health care and energy.

The administration is betting on the success of radiowave auctions to pay for some of the projects. It hopes to raise about $27.8 billion for the Treasury.

The administration says some of the balance of funds – about $10 billion – would help reduce the federal deficit.

Obama and the Federal Communications Commission have devised a plan to create voluntary auctions for those broadcast airwaves and have promised to give television stations some of the proceeds.

Analysts have said the process will require legislation and will be difficult to achieve this year.

Yahoo Announces Its Digital Newstand – Livestand

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 06:58 AM PST

Yahoo has announced a new product called Livestand. It is an app for iPad and Android tablets that puts the company squarely in the middle of the current trend toward multimedia-centered digital news. Livestand will offer “a continuous stream of programming based on users’ interests.”

Following in the footsteps of News Corp.’s The Daily, Yahoo said that ‘Livestand’ will initially be only available as an app for Apple’s iPad and Android-based tablets, but the company said new web and smartphone versions are in the pipeline.

Yahoo said that, at the moment, the tablet apps will focus solely on offering personalised content from Yahoo-owned web properties. The apps are set to offer external media content in the future, the company said.

Described as a novel way for content publishers and advertisers to reach smartphone and tablet users, Livestand currently offers media content from Yahoo websites like Yahoo Sports, Yahoo News, Flickr, OMG and the Yahoo-owned Associated Content.

Users will be able to customise the app based on their preferences, time of the day and location.

The app is set to be released for the iPad and Android tablets later this year.
