Japan Plans To Build Fastest Train In The World

Posted: 27 Feb 2011 04:14 AM PST

The Central Japan Railway Company has announced that it plans to build the fastest train in the world, between Tokyo and Nagoya, to be completed by 2027, a next-generation maglev built at a cost of 64 billion dollars.

"Maglev," or magnetically levitated trains travel above ground through an electromagnetic pull and powerful magnets elevate the train above the track, cutting down friction. The only maglev train now in commercial operation is in Shanghai.

The company expects speeds up to 310 miles per hour, shaving travel time between the two cities to 40 minutes from about 95 minutes. (Trains currently in use top out at about 167 miles per hour.) An extension of the high-speed line to Osaka is planned by the end of 2045.

GM Terrain SUV

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 11:52 PM PST

GM shows off Terrain SUV with noise cancellation and said silence equals fuel efficiency. This new high-end audio technology helps terrain get to MPGs and noise cancellation system also helps give GMX crossover one of the quietest interiors………

The technology that makes high-end noise-cancelling headphones coveted by frequent flyers and iPod audiophiles is helping GMC Terrain owners save gas.Active noise cancellation does double duty on Terrain. The technology enables the crossover to deliver a segment-leading EPA-rated 32 mpg in highway driving while ensconcing the driver in one of the quietest interiors in its segment. On the highway, Terrain easily tops the 28-mpg rating of Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. When GM engineers set out to deliver segment-leading fuel economy on Terrain they chose to lower the 6-speed transmission’s gear shift points to enable the Ecotec 2.4L four-cylinder engine to run at lower rpm torque.

In this Eco mode which the driver can activate with a click of a button on the console and the torque converter clutch engages at lower engine speeds to help save gas. While the engineering action improved fuel efficiency by up to one mpg, it also created an objectionable low-end frequency boom. To counteract that boom the engineers turned to active noise cancellation technology.Terrain’s noise cancellation system relies on two microphones embedded in the headliner to detect the hum and prompt an onboard frequency generator to create counteracting sound waves through the audio system’s speakers and sub-woofer. The system also reduces higher rpm engine noise at highway cruising speeds to help keep the vehicle interior quiet.

The use of direct injection and variable valve timing also help maximize Terrain‘s fuel efficiency. In a direct injection engine, fuel is fed straight to the engine’s combustion chamber, allowing it to burn more evenly and thoroughly. For the driver, that can translate to better mileage and greater power to the wheels. Variable valve timing eliminates the compromise inherent in conventional fixed valve timing and allows a previously unattainable mix of low-rpm torque even torque delivery over a broad range of engine speeds  and free-breathing, high-rpm horsepower.Terrain uses electric power steering which does not require engine power to operate like traditional hydraulic power steering and draws electric power only as needed which improves efficiency and extends component life. Electric power steering systems are relatively compact, help lower vehicle weight and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 3.5 percent.

GM engineers also worked closely with tire suppliers to develop low-rolling resistance tires which typically require less effort to roll forward and minimize wasted energy. Terrain‘s tire unlike some low drag tires was designed to provide good grip on snow and wet pavement while improving fuel economy by more than 1 mpg.Program engineers improved Terrain‘s highway fuel economy up to one mpg by reducing aerodynamic drag through the refinement of the front air dam, rocker panel, roof line, outside rear view mirrors and front bumper. By working on clay models in GM‘s state-of-the-art wind tunnel, the engineers were able to reduce its wind noise to ensure quiet driving.Engineers also minimized the Terrain‘s curb weight by using lightweight aluminum chassis components and noise reduction materials that weigh less than traditional materials.

Samsung Galaxy S To Get Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update in March

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 10:58 PM PST

Samsung Germany has apparently confirmed that the Galaxy S will get an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update in March 2011. The announcement comes today at an event in Frankfurt. The addumption is that the update would be slated for the international version of the Galaxy S.

According to PocketNow:

This information comes courtesy of an occasional gadget blogger who attended the event in Frankfurt, where Samsung has its European headquarters. According to the tweet he's shared, the update will arrive next month, but apparently he wasn't privy to any information that would narrow down that release window

We have to assume based on where this information was supposedly released that this date only refers to the European Galaxy S, and that we shouldn’t expect Gingerbread from all the US carrier-specific Galaxy S cousins in the same timeframe. Even in Europe, we may see a staggered delivery; expect phones which got Froyo first to also be first in line for Gingerbread.

Play PlayStation 3 Games On iPhone iPad & iPod Touch With EveryAir[Video]

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 09:41 PM PST

New hackers and developers called “pandaelf” has been able to successfully play PlayStation 3 games on an iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. With a little wrangling of simple hardware and everyAir.

So how they are able to do such a thing, the team connected a capture device to PlayStation3 console for sening video data to the computer, a USB keyboard or mouse with a PS3 console for sending button control commands. everyAir was installed on the PC to help it understand custom gestures. The output is transferred to PlayStation3 console using the input operator.

Q&A:
=========================

Q: What's the overall picture for how this works?
A: The trick is to connect a capture device and a USB mouse/keyboard device to the PS3. The capture device sends video data to the PC, and the USB keyboard/mouse sends the button presses. On the PC itself, you run a custom build of everyAir which understands custom gestures and pipes the input to the PC which then sends it to the PS3 via the input interpreter.

Q: What were some of the hurdles?
A: There are two problems to solve: sending the video signal to the iOS device and sending back input from the iOS device. Sending the video signal is solved by using an off the shelf capture device, and then sending back the input is a combination of a custom build of everyAir with an off the shelf mouse/keyboard device that connects to the PS3.

Q: How do you send input to the PS3?
A: Using one of those USB Keyboard/Mouse devices. For example, Eagle Eye (search for it on Amazon).

Q: How do you get the video signal from the PS3 to the iOS device?
A: We do this by using an off the shelf capture device. The capture device connects to the PC, TV, and to the PS3. The result is that a livestream of the PS3′s video signal ends up on the PC.

Q: How do you connect to the PC from the iOS device?
A: Using everyAir – our remote desktop application.

Q: How does everyAir understand the game gestures?
A: We're using a custom build of everyAir, and it's hardcoded to understand these gestures. Additionally, it knows how to pipe input to the mouse/kb device in a way that it expects.

Q: Will this be publicly available?
A: We plan to release a fully customizable version at some point in the future.

Report: Sony Working on Hack-Proof PS3

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 09:17 PM PST

Crunch Gear has reported that Sony is said to be actively entertaining plans to introduce a so-called “hack-proof” PS3. At a time when Sony is spending good money to bring down the man we know as Geohot through the legal system, it’s safe to say that companies mean business – more so now than ever – when it comes to curbing piracy and software hacking/modding.

According to the report:

Exactly how Sony would make this new PS3 "hack-proof" is anyone's guess. The fact is there's no such thing on this planet as "hack-proof," but that's not to say Sony couldn't implement new security measures that would take a long time to circumvent. Let's not forget that it took nearly four years for the PS3 to be cracked. At the same time, any new "hack-proof" PS3 would naturally attract plenty of attention, so who knows how long it would remain "hack-proof"?

Rumor suggests the new PS3 would replace all currently existing PS3 SKUs. However, that won't make the device hack proof, it will perhaps make it more secure and less prone to vulnerabilities which will take long enough to implement. Rumor further suggests the device, priced at $300, is going to come with 300GB hard drive, which is a lot of space for limited content.

iPhone 5 Parts Leaked With Larger Screen

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 09:02 PM PST

A Chinese reseller of Apple's parts has published an image of iPhone 5. The panel is somewhat has round about bigger screen than the the current generation iPhones may be 4 inches exact. The panel also showing thinner bazel screen which was recently rumoured in different reports.

iDealsChina writes:

China's 1st iPhone 5 photo has surfaced! From this photo it seems that the screen size will be larger than iPhone 4. There has been a lot of specualtion about a larger screen and maybe this will be one of the upgrades we will see when iPhone 5 is released this summer.

Reports also suggest that Apple has invested about $4B in some technological development which we are speculating to be in display technology to feature a larger screen on same encasement by getting the display to the edge of the phone. My only wish is they make it look lesser ugly than it does in the mock up.

Apple is said to be working on the completely redesigned of iPhone 5 in summer 2011. The iPhone 5 may also carry an upgraded A4 processor, already dubbed the A5 chip, in addition to a new Gobi WWAN chip already found in the Verizon iPhone, designed to work on both CDMA and GSM networks.
