Trials Of Renewable Energy In Highways

Renewable energy technologies are likely to become more important as other energy sources become depleted and the cost of power generation using fossil fuels rises. Renewable sources of energy have considerable potential for increasing security of supply although, in most cases, they require significant initial investment. Recognising the importance of developing renewable energy resources, the Highways Agency commissioned a preliminary scoping study in 2001 to explore available methods and assess the possibility of renewable energy generation being exploited within the highway network. This study recommended a positive response by Highways Agency in implementing full-scale trials of renewable energy generation.

Among the various means of transportation, highways cover the widest and in effect the greatest area of our precious landmass. In context of the present scenario, spaces required for energy generation are becoming scarce day by day, and yet paradoxically no substantial effort has been made to make use of the very spaces incorporated by the highways themselves. Make no mistake – solar panels have been laid beside roads, wind turbines have been installed in breezy areas; but the highways themselves continue to be the least utilized ones.

Trends :

1. Solar Roadways

The Solar Roadway is a prototype of an 'intelligent' road with solar panels imbued onto the road itself. Along with generating clean electricity, these panels can also provide data about damages and other information, by the help of microprocessing boards embedded in them.

2. Solar Arch on Highways

The Solar Arch is a concept formulated by industrial designer Tyson Steele. It will provide covering for rural roads, that in turn can generate renewable solar energy for off-grid highway lighting. The Solar Arch can also supplement electricity demands in neighboring low capacity required areas.

3. Jet Stream Super-Highway

Conceived by industrial designer David Huang, this unique concept features vehicles extracting energy from the road infrastructure and roads in turn drawing energy from the environment. Based on an open-return wind tunnel design that produces a continuous stream of air flow from the environment, the roadway is shaped like a half-pipe in cross section. It has a series of solar-powered turbines and fans hovering above to push air into the road pathway, in addition to continuously drawing air at a controlled rate by outer drawing vents on the flanks – forming a cycle effect.

4. E Turbine on the Highways

Conceptualized by industrial designer Pedro Gomes and aptly named the E Turbine, it is basically a wind generation system that uses the air movement emanated from passing traffic to produce and accumulate energy. Supposedly it can also work with street and road lighting, information panels and emergency phones.

5. Green Roadway Project – Solar and wind generators mounted on Highways

Contrived by inventors Gene Fein and Ed Merritt, this >progressive project is based upon the green dictum of endless highways becoming metamorphosed into renewable energy generators, which could one day power our cities with clean energy and can also offer electricity for roadside charging of electric vehicles.

Hitachi i.μ Type V and Hitachi i.μ Type S Portable Player

Hitachi has announced two new pocket-sized player, the Hitachi i.μ Type V and Hitachi i.μ Type S. Both the digital audio player is announced for release in Japan next Monday.

Both Type V and Type S i.μ digital audio players will have 4GB internal memory, read and play .wma and .mp3 media files. You will find a 2-inch screen that capable to deliver 176×220 pixel resolution, and both types of Hitachi i.μ read JPEG or BMP files.

The Hitachi i.μ Type S is a 'USB drive' form factor and support for 128 x 64 pixels screen.The i.μ Type S however comes without a color screen or a Radio FM Tuner but with a USB Thumb key design allowing you to use it for both listening to music and storing data at the same time.

Hitachi i.μ Type V will be available in white and brown color options, while the Hitachi i.μ Type S is white, brown, pink and blue flavors.

The pivot style lid flips open conveninetly and ensures that your USB drive's lid won't be lost. It has a slim and curve design that allowing pivoting open and closed for protected the USB connector.

The FLIP is an easy to carry 4 or 8GB USB flash drive. Right at the top is a hinge for it to pivot open, so when it's closed it's well protected. The FLIP is said to be compatible with USB 3.0, 2.0 and 1.1 and work both on Mac and PC — pretty much anything with a female end.

  6. Once the update is complete: Your Kindle will automatically restart a second time. When you go to the Settings page, you should notice Version: Kindle 3.1 at the bottom of the screen. Once you see this, you know your update is complete.

White Nexus S Coming To Vodafone

Samsung was quietly working on its own white version of the Nexus S and coming soon to Vodafone.Vodafone Germany says its Nexus S will have a Super Clear LCD screen not a Super AMOLED one………

According to Techradar, Vodofone which was the sole operator selling Google's previous Nexus One handset will be the first and the only operator to offer the white Nexus S for sale.The charcoal version of the handset is also available from Carphone Warehouse as well as Best Buy, though indirectly on all leading mobile phone operators.The white Nexus S include a 4-inch touchscreen, 1GHZ Cortex A8 processor and a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus. The handset will also launch the latest Android 3.0 Gingerbread.The backgrounds on its OS will reportedly be black; thereby marking a change which supposedly will help enhance contrast and battery life of the phone.

confirmSMS for iPhone Lets you Confirm Before Sending SMS

Sprint Announces Dual-Screen Android Smartphone – Kyocera Echo

David Blaine and Sprint has unveiled the world's first dual-touchscreen Android smartphone, the Kyocera Echo which runs on the Android 2.2 operating system and has access to more than 100,000 apps in Android Market.

The Echo features two 3.5-inch touchscreen displays which allows users to view it in portrait mode when it's closed, or like a tablet when it's open and the screens are adjacent to each other. The smartphone is running Android 2.2 Froyo, but Kyocera has dedicated apps that work for the two screens like VueQue – a YouTube app that lets you watch videos on one screen while you queue up videos on the other.

The lone Motorola Xoom owner, appropriately reading 1984, is comparatively colorful and uses his tablet to help him find a flower shop.

Untethered iOS 4.3 Jailbreak is On the Way

Following Chronic Dev's Greenpois0n release popular dev team member MuscleNerd has shared some interesting news on Twitter. In a Tweet, MuscleNerd confirmed that the aim of the game has to be to get Monte jailbreak to work with iOS 4.3. Which would suggest that they already have the jailbreak, just need to make it work without your computer.

MuscleNerd also stated that they were working on a way to use 4.2.1 SHSH blobs instead of 4.2b3 ones, which would make this jailbreak much more accessible.

Report: Android 2.4 Coming in April

Google is going to release the next major build of its Android OS at some point in April, and ViewSonic will be among the first cell phone makers to release an Android 2.4-powered device. According to Pocket-lint's sources at ViewSonic, Google has pulled forward the v2.4 release date so as to bring support for applications coded for dual-core devices – such as those running Android 3.0 Honeycomb – to single-core handsets, something Android 2.3 is currently unable to do.

The rumour does level with news from last week which suggested that the next Android release would bring bits of Honeycomb to smartphones.

Android 2.4 will definitely merge two OS, Gingerbread (mobile OS) and honeycomb (Tablet OS) respectively. The ViewPad 4 is due out this April, which implies other devices based on Android 2.4 should be available around the same time.

Report: Apple to Host WWDC 2011 From 5th – 9th June

AppleBitch have reported that Apple's WWDC 2011 (Worldwide Developer Conference) is scheduled for June 5th – June 9th at San Franciso's Moscone West. It is also interesting to note that there are two other Corporate Meetings / Events on the schedule which may or may not represent Apple meetings.

The event was marked as 'Corporate Meeting'. These dates match to the WWDC dates which were leaked in April, 2010.

The source also noted that, no other time in the schedule would fit Apple's usual parameters. They also believe that, June 6th would be a day for Keynotes. Though Steve Jobs presence is in question as he is still in medical leave.

Chronic Dev Team member pod2g has confirmed that Apple iOS 4.2.6 for Verizon iPhone 4 has been jailbroken. Verizon iPhone 4 is jailbroken using Greenpois0n. The hacker asked through his Twitter account that they need to test Greenpois0n for Verizon iPhone. In reply he got confirmations from his followers that indeed the GP works and jailbreaks CDMA Verizon Wireless iPhone 4.

A few hours back, iPhone hacking maestro pod2g, famous for the GreenPois0n exploit, asked in tweet that whether or not the latest version of GreenPois0n was compatible with the new hardware, that is the Verizon iPhone 4.

Later, while receiving several replies from people willing to test, it seems that it may now be possible to jailbreak Verizon iPhone 4 using GreenPois0n RC5 and even a later build which most probably is GreenPois0n RC6.

The following instructions will help you jailbreak your CDMA based iPhone 4 untethered on Verizon using the latest version of GreenPois0n.

Step 1: Download GreenPois0n

Step 2: Connect your Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 via USB to your computer and click on "Jailbreak" .

Step 3: Now follow the instructions to enter DFU mode:

* Press and hold the sleep button for 2 seconds
* Continue holding sleep; press and hold home for 10 seconds.
* Release sleep button; continue holding home for 15 seconds.

Step 4: GreenPois0n will now start "Jailbreaking" your iPhone, untethered on 4.2.6.

Step 5: Your iPhone should now be successfully jailbroken on iOS 4.2.6. Now start "Loader" found on the homescreen and install Cydia.
